2008 District 4-4A Preview
Predicted Order of Finish
Division 1 Teams in All Caps
1. ABILENE COOPER
2. WOLFFORTH FRENSHIP
4. Big Spring
6. San Angelo Lake View
Outlook: What was considered a weak district last year has gotten much deeper after realignment. Abilene Cooper down from 5A and Hereford who advanced three rounds deep in 2007 gives this district some extra firepower. Cooper is the early favorite with their skill talent returning and with Frenship's graduation losses. Hereford looks solid in third place, and the real fight could be for the last playoff spot as cases can be made for all three teams.
Team by Team
Abilene Cooper Cougars: After knocking heads with 5A powers Abilene High and Odessa Permian, the Cougars should find the going easier in Class 4A. On offense CHS is led by RB A'Mon Pimpton who posted over 1100 yards rushing as a junior in Class 5A. Cooper's defense is where the headliners roam with Texas Tech commit Will Ford at DB, DL Brandon Henderson and two other prospects in the secondary in Demetric Lee and Stephun Hazlett. Cooper will make the playoffs but the question remains if they can make a move in the postseason as the Division 1 bracket could feature Wichita Falls Rider and Mansfield Timberview who eliminated CHS from the postseason.
Wolfforth Frenship Tigers: The Tigers who advanced to the State Quarter-Finals before being eliminated by Aledo have some work to do as graduation depleted the ranks. FHS could be led by a sophomore this year as Brandon Hanslik will lead the offense. Mason Walters is a flat out stud on the offensive line so look for the Tigers to run behind him quite a bit, but Walters isn't the only one back up front as the Tigers offensive line is experienced. Zero starters return on defense and that's got to be a concern heading into 2008 for Coach Davis.
Hereford Whitefaces : Behind sophomore QB Parker Bridwell, the Whitefaces made a surprising run to the Regional Semi-Finals last year. Bridwell leads an offense that has six starters back and should be even better in 2008. RB Nathan Losolla is a dual threat out of the backfield and will be counted on heavily while the young receivers mature. HHS has seven back on defense and that will bode well for a major step forward, however there are concerns for Hereford when taking on teams with speed.
Big Spring Steers: Big Spring has more offensive skill talent that just about anyone in the district, but the Steers lack size and depth upfront and that could keep them out of the playoffs. RB Monte Anderson is considered one of the top backs in the Class of 2010 while WR Sidney Parker is very underrated. WR/DB LaRay Woodard gives BSHS some much needed speed as he transferred in from Mansfield Summit. LB Cade Hollandsworth joins Woodard on a defense that should be much improved with 8 starters back.
Plainview Bulldogs: Angry Red as they are known on the High Plains struggled to a 1-9 mark in 2007. However 33 letterman return and that gives Coach McClintock hope that the Bulldogs can compete for a playoff spot. RB Melvin Shivers is a big bruising back who exemplifies the Plainview running style. 8 starters return on defense led by DE Jacob Hinojos and DB Chance Aven. If Plainview can find another offensive playmaker or two they could move up as high as third in this district.
San Angelo Lake View Chiefs: Lake View had hopes for a big improvement in 2007 but instead they fell to a 2-8 mark. QB John David Baker is a major dual threat for the Chiefs but also keep an eye their pair of RB's Chris Blair and Tavonte Williams. Lake View struggles with a lack of depth and speed especially on the defensive side of the ball.
