Now that the Alief Hastings football team will face off with schools from the Spring Branch ISD (and Strake Jesuit), there may be a change of pace. But coach Greg Alexander is not taking the new district lightly and is preparing his team for more battles in 2008.

Alexander brings back 10 (5 OFF, 5 DEF) starters from last year's 6-4 team that just missed the playoffs.

The team will likely look to offensive playmakers like wide receivers Shaquille Tubman and Alvin Mitchell. Tubman finished last season with 27 catches while Mitchell had 17. Both of them should haul in more receptions this season.

At quarterback look for Michael Edwards and the running back Tavares Williams. Also look for tight end Ja'Darius Davis to get involved with the offense.

Defensively, the Bears seem to have a solid unit and Desmond Griffin seems to be slated as the leader. Griffin had 45 tackles and three sacks last season. Joining him will be Jacob Conway who had 36 tackles and four sacks.

Up front, Jonathan Johnson is the big man and looks to build on last season's 27 tackles and two-sack performance. In 2007, the Hastings defense was ranked No. 2 in the district only behind Katy giving up only 237.4 yards a game.
