CELINA- The defending Class 3A Division II State Champions looked solid in their final tune-up before the 2008 season in a scrimmage with the Bridgeport Bulls at Bobcat Field. The Bobcats still have some questions to answer on the defensive side of the ball, but despite missing RB Charley Waldrep who sat out due to precautionary reasons Celina was able to move the ball well. Bridgeport was able to move the ball through the air well, but as always the Bulls have questions on defense and the running game struggled save for a couple of good scrambles.
Celina's offense took the ball first and the Bobcats worked on the passing game with some success as CHS scored on a 50 yard slip screen, one of the WR's made a great block to spring the play for the score. Celina would score quickly again on a 49 yard run right up the middle as they exposed the soft middle of the Bridgeport defense.
Bridgeport's first offense came out and looked sharp throwing the ball as the Bulls drove inside the Celina five on all passing plays but the lack of a power ground game showed and the Bulls were stopped on downs. Bridgeport did respond with a 59 yard pass on first down of the ensuing set of downs and two plays later BHS scored with an 11 yard touchdown pass.
The second team offenses took the field next and Celina's backups showed flashes but they were unable to score. Bridgeport's second offense showed a flash of a ground game as their backup QB scored on a nice 37 yard run up the middle of the Celina defense. The teams played a live quarter with Celina winning 7-0 as sophomore RB Jose Romero scored on a 3 yard run for the only score.
