Plano's Strong Second Half Upends DeSoto

MURPHY –- Texas Prep Insider's Area #9 DeSoto (1-0, 0-0) and #2 Plano (1-0, 0-0) met at center stage for TXA21's game of the week at Kimbrough Stadium in Murphy. DeSoto started out strong taking a 20-8 lead at halftime but that wasn't enough to hold Plano as they scored 21 unanswered points eventually winning the game 28-14

Tonight's game started out well for DeSoto (1-0) as Marcus Murphy returned the kickoff from the 2 to the 26 yard line. 7 plays in, Ryan Polite hit Sam Ajala for a 41 yard completion down to the 6 yard line. After a gain of 1 and a holding penalty, Polite looked to Ajala again for the 11 yard touchdown reception as he cut in front of the defender to make a nice catch. The Eagles would then line up for the field goal, but the holder, Darius Terrell, picked up the ball and ran it in around the edge for the 2-pt conversion. DeSoto lead at that point 8-0.

A couple possessions later, DeSoto was ready and willing to start moving the ball, however Polite threw a jump ball over the middle of the field where it was intercepted by Laron Kelly at DeSoto's 22 yard line. A couple of plays later, Burkhead drew it up the middle for an 18 yard touchdown run. The point after try was good, and Plano drew closer, but still trailed 8-7.

With just over a minute to go in the first quarter DeSoto with the ball at the 17 yard line. After 2 passes set them up at the 47 yard line, DeSoto meant business. 13 plays later, Polite hit Murphy in the end zone on a 7 pass to the inside of the front pylon. They would then attempt the point after. The kick was about a mile to far to the left, and DeSoto had a 14-7 lead. With 3:41 left in the half, DeSoto would get the ball again on the 27 yard line. The possession would begin with Webb gushing up the middle, followed by a 9 yard keeper by Polite totaling 19 yards. On 2nd and 10 Marcus Murphy countered to the left for a pickup 15 and the first down to the 20. 2 plays later a Polite keeper for 14 yards to the end zone made Plano's defense look silly giving DeSoto the 20-7 lead after the PAT was once again missed.

Plano started the second half with good ball movement with Burkhead touching the ball on 5 of their 12 plays. The last was a toss to him which went for 7 yards and the touchdown bringing the Wildcats within reach, 20-14. The drive also included receptions to Ashton Williams 13 yards and Cameron Swiney for 10 yards.

Laron Kelly would then force the fumble on DeSoto's next possession. After the recovery by junior LB Alex LaButis, Meger would throw 2 incomplete passes. One of those would draw the pass interference, setting up Plano on the DeSoto 16 yard line. 4 plays later Plano was forced with a decision to make. 4th and 1 they decided to go for it. Meger would line up under center and plow his way 6 yards for the touchdown giving them a 21-20 lead after the PAT was good with 3:16 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

The Eagles' next drive would end with a Laron Kelly interception taken to the DeSoto 10. This was his second interception of the game. 3 plays later Meger hit Kris Lott in the end zone on a beautiful fade for the touchdown. With 5:22 to go, Plano took the lead 28-21. Two DeSoto possessions later, Justin Collins intercepted the pass intended for a receiver deep across the middle. With just 37 seconds to go in the game, Plano would kneel their way to victory.
