Denison Holds off Big Spring in a Thriller

Denison's offense got rolling in the second half Friday night, but the Yellow Jackets still needed some late heroics to escape with a 44-37 win over the fiesty Big Spring Steers at Munson Stadium.

DENISON- Despite being completely outmanned the Big Spring Steers (1-1) took the Denison Yellow Jackets (1-0) to the wire in a 44-37 win Friday night at Munson Stadium. Denison who was down by sixteen points at two different stages in the first half the Yellow Jacket offense exploded in the second half which was the difference in the game. Denison RB D. J. Jones despite only playing in the third quarters was absolutely unstoppable rushing for 195 yards and 3 touchdowns including the game winner with 19 seconds left from 56 yards out.

Big Spring who was without QB Tyler Tannehill had to play starting TE Matt Ritchey at the QB slot and the offense at times sputtered, however it was the defense early the carried the Steers. On Denison's first play from scrimmage QB Jordan Taylor fumbled and DB Keegan Hunt for Big Spring scooped the ball up and raced 42 yards for the score. Big Spring has a shaky kicking game so they went for two and converted to take an early 8-0. The turnover bug hit Denison on their third play from scrimmage as Taylor was picked off by Ritchey who got a great return and two plays later Monte Anderson scored on a four yard run. Again the two point try was good and Big Spring less than two minutes into the game held a shocking 16-0 lead.

Taylor would throw another interception on the Yellow Jackets next possession as LaRay Woodard came down with the turnover, however this time the Steers went out on downs. Denison would seem to wake up after that turnover as Taylor broke loose for a 59 yard touchdown run to cut the Steers lead to 16-7. Big Spring's offense would get a huge play of their own as on their next possession Ritchey scored on a 51 yard run to give the Steers a 23-7 lead after one quarter of action.

Denison's defense settled in and started to take charge of the game in the second quarter as after getting a field goal the lead was cut to 23-10. DHS forced a three and out and they went on a solid drive scoring on a one yard run by Sean Brown to make it 23-18 as the Yellow Jackets got the two point try, and that would be the score at the half.

Denison started the second half by unleashing the beast otherwise known as D.J. Jones, Jones who sat out the first half due to coaches decision busted loose on the second play of the half on a 69 yard scoring jaunt to make it 24-23 Denison as the PAT kick failed. After getting an interception late in the third quarter Denison appeared to take charge of the game taking a 31-23 lead early in the fourth quarter as Taylor hooked up with Devin Jackson for a 21 yard touchdown pass.

Big Spring appeared to be in major trouble as Denison forced a BSHS punt, however the Steers were given new life as DHS was penalized for roughing the kicker. The Steers would get a huge play to move the ball down to the ten yard line as WR Zamir Linton caught a short pass and broke loose for a 67 yard gain. Monte Anderson capped the drive with a seven yard scoring run to tie it up at 31. Denison would again have an answer for BSHS as Jones scored his third touchdown of the half on a fifteen yard run, however the PAT try was no good and Denison held a precarious 37-31 advantage.

Big Spring took the ball back and appeared to be dead to rights, however on 4th and nine Ritchey hooked up with WR Thaddeus Straughter for a 66 yard pass down to the Denison nine. Ritchey capped the drive with a four yard run to tie it up at 37 with a minute left. Ritchey's PAT to give the Steers the lead was blocked and with 57 seconds left the game was tied up at 37. Denison with no timeouts got a short kickoff and four plays into the drive Jones again struck scoring on a 56 yard jaunt with just nineteen seconds left to make it 44-37 as Munson Stadium was beside itself. Big Spring made one last ditch effort, but the Hail Mary pass was intercepted and Denison escaped with an exciting season opening 44-37 win.
