Cy Woods' second-half spark key in first win

Cy Woods coach David Jones said that his Wildcat team would never give up and that his boys would stay in the game and fight. Saturday night at the Cy Fair Berry Center, the fans saw that statement come to life as Cy Woods earned its first-ever varsity win over A&M Consolidated 28-17.

The big headline for the night was the 17-0 deficit that the Wildcats were facing as they went into the locker room at halftime. Cy Woods, powered by the stellar play of quarterback Lucas Devilliers, roared back to score 28 unanswered points.

And apparently, there weren't any major adjustments or even lengthy speeches that occurred during the break. The big scoring surge just kind of happened.

"We played horrible the in the first half, but there was no magic thing that happened at halftime," Jones said. "You know what you got and you know your kids and your team. And the team knows each other. They knew that they didn't play very well. But the bottom line is, we came out in the second half and the environment and the intensity changed."

And so it began. The Wildcats came out hitting hard and fast on both sides of the ball. At the start of the third quarter, Devilliers connected with Isiah Battle for 30 yards, which set up a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Conley.

Conley was the Wildcats' leading receiver on the night with 7 catches for 74 yards and a score.

Two minutes later, the Wildcats went back to work. A four-play, 75-yard drive ended when Devilliers threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Seth Crosby.

Devilliers ended the night with 233 yards passing and two touchdowns. The Wildcats' final two touchdowns were also from Devilliers from six and 10 yards respectively. He had 104 total rushing yards.

"There is a joy and excitement that I feel right now. I mean this the first varsity victory in school history," Devilliers said.

On the Tigers' side, it seemed as though tonight was going to be their night. On the second play from scrimmage, quarterback Patrick O'Quinn tossed a 61-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Smith to take the early lead. O' Quinn threw for 220 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Running back Javon Searcy, who ended the night with 33 total yards, cashed in the next score from 12 yards and a 27-yard field goal by Matt Stoll was A&M Consolidated's complete scoring summary as the Tigers were blanked in the second half.

"We had our heads down in the first half, but then we came out in the second half and just had fun," Devilliers said. "That is what football is all about."

Cy Woods will travel next week to play Klein Oak on Saturday.
