Lake Highlands offense flattens Richardson

Lake Highlands gains 378 first half yards behind a dominant offensive line.

LAKE HIGHLANDS – The early stop the Richardson defense made only delayed the inevitable.

Lake Highlands provided ample proof that Richardson was not up to the challenge Friday night at Wildcat-Ram Stadium. The Lake Highlands offensive line mashed the Richardson defense from the start and never let up. Led by Desmond Roland the Lake Highlands runners burst through gaping holes. Had quarterback Ricky Zorn not run the ball five times there would be no need to launder his jersey. Lake Highlands dominated Richardson, 38-7. Lake Highlands keeps pace with Carrollton Creekview as both sit atop district 9-5A.

Zorn began the game by hooking up with Billy Allen on a 38 yard pass. Antoine Harrison gashed the Richardson defense for 18 yards on the very next play. The Richardson defense was on its heels early. The Lake Highlands marched within inches of the goal line but Zorn was gang tackled by the Richardson defense on 4th and goal. Richardson needed a first down to at least give its punting unit some cushion. Jordan Booty barely crossed the 10 yard line for the first down. Richardson was stopped and had to punt four plays later. The second drive for Lake Highlands mirrored its first as the Richardson defense provided little resistance. Desmond Rolan scored on a three yard run with 2:23 remaining in the first quarter to give Lake Highlands a 7-0 lead. Zorn hooked up on a 23 yard pass with Dionte Garrett on a deep corner route that put the ball on the Richardson three yard line.

The flood gates opened in the second quarter.

Rolan scored on a 16 yard run just 21 seconds into the quarter to give the Lake Highlands a 14-0 lead. Lake Highlands took over at its 48 yard line following a second Richardson punt with 41 seconds left in the first quarter. The scoring drive took only four plays.

Wesley Garth gave the Richardson faithful a rise when he returned the ensuing kickoff 55 yards to the Lake Highlands 40 yard line. Richardson recorded only its second first down of the game when quarterback Christian Cline passed 15 yards to Justin Patterson. Unfortunately, James Duke intercepted Cline's deep post pass on the very next play at the Lake Highlands two yard line. The poor field position did not bother the Lake Highlands one bit. Taylor Stephenson gave Lake Highlands cushion with a 13 yard run. Four plays later Zorn hooked up on a 41 yard pass with Garrett to move into Richardson territory. Zorn and Allen later hooked up on a six yard touchdown to give Lake Highlands a 21-0 lead with 5:04 remaining.

Booty busted the Lake Highlands defense for a 40 yard run on the very next series as Richardson entered enemy territory for the first time. Richardson drove inside the Lake Highlands 10 yard line a few plays later but the drive stalled. Booty was tackled for a two yard loss on 4th and 4 at the Lake Highlands 10 yard line.

Lake Highlands (5-2, 4-0) took over with just 46 seconds remaining in the half and provided the dagger by going 90 yards in two plays. Roland ran for 11 yards to the 21 yard line. Zorn then found Allen wide open on a deep post for a 79 yard score, giving Lake Highlands a 28-0 lead.

How dominant was the Lake Highlands offense in the first half? The team gained 134 yards in the first quarter and 244 yards in the second quarter.

The second half looked sloppy as Lake Highlands both teams turned the ball over on opening drives. Lake Highlands punted for the first time with 6:44 to go in the 3rd quarter.

Jason Dann gave Lake Highlands a 31-0 lead late in the third quarter when he kicked a 32 yard field goal.

Garth was the big play guy for Richardson (3-4, 2-2). Garth returned the ensuing kickoff 64 yards to give Richardson great field position. A few plays later Cline passed 25 yards to Garth to cut the deficit to 31-7. This was the first play of the fourth quarter.

Zorn and Allen answered the Richardson score less than two minutes later with their third and final hookup on a 15 yard scoring pass for the game's final margin.

Rolan finished with 158 yards rushing on 17 carries. Allen finished with eight catches for 171 yards. Zorn finished 13 of 17 for 274 yards. Lake Highlands gained an outstanding 542 total yards.
