EVERMAN-High School football is often a funny game and once or twice a season a reminder of that is sent every season to a sports writer. Such was the case Friday night at Marr Stadium as the Everman Bulldogs (7-0, 4-0) annihilated the Stephenville Yellow Jackets (4-3, 3-1) 56-3 in a District 8-4A contest. Everman's defense was the story returning three turnovers for scores in the second quarter, while Chris Franklin ran for 135 yards on just three carries and scored three times.

Heading into Friday's contest most "experts" pegged this game to be similar to last year's clash when the two teams played an instant classic won by Everman 31-28 in overtime. However an early injury to Stephenville QB Brad Picha would prove to turn the course of this game in a hurry.

On the game's opening drive, Stephenville was able to move the ball down the field with relative ease. On a 2nd and 20 play from the Everman 40 yard line, QB Brad Picha sprinted up the middle for a 19 yard run. On the play, Picha was nailed by Everman DB Barry Browning and would leave the game for the duration. The drive stalled and Stephenville would take a 3-0 lead on German Chavarria's 28 yard field goal. Everman would quickly respond with a three play drive as they were given a short field on the kickoff and an ensuing fifteen yard penalty and the Bulldogs took the lead for good at 7-3 on Chris Franklin's first score from 34 yards out.

In the second quarter it appeared Stephenville was driving for a score, however backup QB Matt Collins was picked by sophomore DB Cory Franklin who made a great play on the ball and sprinted 85 yards the other way and it was 14-3 Everman. On the next possession, Stephenville RB Brad Mills would fumble and DB Sam Birdine picked up the loose ball and went 59 yards the other way to the house and the lead swelled to 21-3 EHS. The Yellow Jackets appeared to settle down on the next drive behind the running of Mills and sophomore James Miles. SHS moved all the way to the Everman one, but Miles was stripped on a second and goal play by LB Lee Langston and Browning would scoop the ball up and race 95 yards untouched for a stunning 28-3 Everman lead. That would be the score at the half as Everman held the lead despite only running 10 plays to Stephenville's 42.

In the second half the game turned into a laugher as on the opening drive Everman jumped out to a 35-3 lead as Chris Franklin scored on a 37 yard run. Ryan Smith added a three yard run, while Chris Franklin late in the third scored on a 64 yard scamper and after three quarters it was 49-3. Everman would add one late score as Cory Franklin scored on a 78 yard run for the final margin of 56-3.

Everman which has now won three in a row over Stephenville will visit Joshua next week. Stephenville coming off their worst loss since a 62-0 defeat to Brownwood in 1987 will take on Granbury.
