Morrison Passes Royse City to Win

Royse City QB Richard Morrison threw for 231 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Bulldogs held off a late Carrollton Newman Smith rally for a 24-16 win Thursday at Standridge Stadium.

CARROLLTON- Richard Morrison threw for 231 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Royse City Bulldogs (6-3, 4-2) to a 24-16 win over the Carrollton Newman Smith Trojans (2-7, 2-4) at Standridge Stadium on Thursday night. The Bulldogs defense was outstanding for three quarters holding Newman Smith to just under 120 yards of offense and no points as RCHS built a 17-0 lead.

The Trojans made a late run scoring sixteen fourth quarter points to make things interesting but a last minute onside kick was recovered by the Bulldogs and a playoff spot was clinched by Royse City for the first time as a 4A school.

Royse City opened up the game strong as on a 4th and one play on their opening possession Morrison hooked up with a wide open Eric Schneider for a 43 yard touchdown pass and the Bulldogs took a 7-0 lead.

Early in the second quarter Royse City would add to the lead as Kollin Padon nailed a 20 yard field goal to give the Bulldogs a 10-0 advantage. Newman Smith began to move the ball midway through the second quarter behind some strong running from Randall Joyner but Royse City DB Cameron Nichols picked off Newman Smith QB Aldo Quiroga to end a threat for the Trojans. Royse City would move the ball right before the half but on a 4th and five with ten seconds left in the half the Bulldogs went for the throat instead of taking the field goal and RCHS held a 10-0 halftime lead.

Royse City in the third quarter appeared to take chare of things as Ryan Fedric caught a six yard touchdown pass from Morrison and the Bulldogs held a commanding 17-0 advantage. Newman Smith early in the fourth quarter finally got on the board as Phillip Ichter nailed a 30 yard field goal to cut the advantage to 17-3. Newman Smith needed a stop to try to crawl back into the game, but Morrison and the Bulldogs offense had other ideas. Morrison decided to go the short route and let his receiver make hay on his own as he hooked up with Justin Jacobs for a 57 yard catch and run for a 24-3 lead. Newman Smith would not go away quietly as the Trojans went into two minute drill mode and Al Lasker would turn into Quiroga's main target catching two late touchdown passes from 23 and 6 yards out respectively before Newman Smith's ill fated onside try.

Besides the solid day from Lasker catching two touchdown passes, junior RB Randall Joyner ran for 129 yards to pace a solid offensive day for the Trojans. Next week Royse City takes on Carrollton Turner, while Newman Smith takes on Richardson Pearce.
