BEDFORD- The top ranked team in the state and the nation got a test on Thursday night, but the Euless Trinity Trojans (10-0, 7-0) held off a game Hurst Bell Blue Raiders squad 30-20 on Thursday night in front of an estimated 11,000 at Pennington Field. Sophomore RB Tevin Williams led the way totaling 134 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Trojans offensive attack. Bell had chances especially in the first half but penalties at inopportune times would throw a monkey wrench into any upset hopes.

Trinity would assert early dominance jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead as the Trojan defense forced a quick Bell three and out. Trinity with a short field after a bad punt would quickly take advantage as Williams scored untouched on a 27 yard run as the Trinity offensive line sealed off the left side and no Bell defender was in reach. The Blue Raiders would put together a nice drive on their second possession, but a personal foul would take Bell out of field goal range and Bell would turn the ball over on downs.

Trinity would be quick to however return the favor as RB Damien Hart would fumble on the Trojans first offensive play and Bell DB Kenny Buyers would fall on the loose ball giving the Blue Raiders new life. This time Bell would capitalize as QB Lehi Tonga would score on a one yard run early in the second quarter to tie the game up at seven.

The remainder of the second quarter was all Trinity as the defending Class 5A Division 1 State Champions asserted their dominance taking a 17-7 lead as QB Denarius McGee scored on a 14 yard run and right before halftime Isaac Arellano kicked a 33 yard field goal.

Early on in the third quarter Trinity would fail in an attempt to add to the lead as the Trojans moved the ball inside the Bell five, but the Blue Raiders defense would hold and Arellano would miss a 21 yard field goal wide left. Bell's offense would quickly go three and out and after another short punt Trinity would extend the lead. McGee would hit RB Stetson Smith in stride on a wheel route and Smith would bull his way into the end zone for a 32 yard touchdown catch and a 24-7 lead for Trinity.

Bell would not go away as they'd embark on an impressive drive and sophomore RB Michael Farrow would bull his way to paydirt on a six yard run and BHS had cut the lead back to ten at 24-14 late in the third quarter.

The next possession would show just way Trinity is the favorite to repeat as state champions as the Trojans would salt the game away with a nine plus minute sixteen play drive capped on a one yard run by Williams to make it 30-14. Bell would respond quickly as Tonga hooked up with Jason Bolton for a six yard touchdown pass to make it 30-20. The Blue Raiders would fail on the two point try and Trinity would recover the onside kick and the Trojans would run the clock out.

Trinity will open the Class 5A state playoffs Saturday at 4pm against the winner of tomorrow's game between Flower Mound and Coppell. Bell's playoff hopes hinge on the result of tomorrow's games in District 5-5A as Keller and Northwest play separate games and if either team losses Bell is in the playoffs. If Keller and Northwest win then there will be a coin flip to determine the two playoff teams.
