Everman Wins Battle of Unbeatens

Everman's defense stepped up big in the second half in a 24-7 win over previously undefeated Aledo on Friday night at Pennington Field.

BEDFORD- The Everman Bulldogs (12-0) held the Aledo Bearcats (11-1) to 37 yards in the second half in an impressive 24-7 win in a Class 4A Region I Division II Area Playoff in front of an estimated 12,000 at Pennington Field. Chris Franklin was a one man show scoring a touchdown rushing, receiving and he also notched the game clinching interception in the fourth quarter.

Aledo took the opening drive and took 7:51 off the clock in 16 plays, however the Bearcats came up empty handed as on a 4th and one play from the Everman four, DE Keith Rushton made a huge play stopping Aledo RB Joel Hasley for no gain. Everman would quickly capitalize on the momentum as Franklin scored on an 83 yard run outrunning the Aledo defense. EHS would miss the PAT and the lead would only be 6-0 after one quarter of action.

The teams would trade punts before the end of the first quarter, but Aledo would get something going on their third drive of the game. Freshman RB Johnathan Gray broke off a 43 yard run setting up a 21 yard touchdown run by QB Tanner McDonald to give the Bearcats a 7-6 lead as Cody Hale's PAT was true. Aledo would threaten once more before the half but couldn't muster another score and at the half Aledo led 7-6.

The second half would belong to Everman, as the Bulldogs scored 18 unanswered points. The barrage started on the first drive of the game as on a third and seven play Marcus McAdoo hooked up with Franklin for a 51 yard touchdown pass, Ryan Smith would add the two point run and it was 14-7 Everman. Aledo would notch one first down, but then be forced to punt. Everman would take the ball back and with the ground game salt away most of the remaining time in the third quarter.

Everman's lead would extend to 17-7 early in the fourth quarter as Andrew Camacho would nail a 32 yard field goal. Aledo's next drive would end in crucial turnover as Chris Franklin would get a juggling interception on the sideline. Everman would milk some more time off the clock with a couple of first downs, but the drive stalled. A great punt by Deantre Harlan would pin the Bearcats deep with less than four minutes left. Aledo would go four and out giving Everman the ball deep in Bearcat territory. Everman would salt the game away as junior FB Ruben Fletcher scored on a two yard run for a 24-7 lead and that would be the final tally of the night as Aledo during desperation time would once again go four and out after getting one first down. Everman would take three knees to end the game and escape with a hard fought 24-7 win.

Next week Everman takes on Big Spring at a time and location to be determined. Aledo which was eliminated in second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2001 also suffered their first ever loss at Pennington Field.
