MESQUITE- It didn't take long for Waco Midway (11-1) to show Texarkana Texas High (9-2) their big play ability and it continued all afternoon in a 35-10 rout of Texas High on Saturday afternoon at Mesquite Memorial. RB John Hubert led the Panthers attack with 169 rushing yards and three touchdowns and TE Trey Graham caught two touchdown passes to pace the Panthers attack.
Ahmad Dixon started the game out with a bang returning the opening kickoff 68 yards for a touchdown to set the early tone, Midway would cash in on the good field position as Hubert scored on a 16 yard run to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead. Texas High had a shot to hold but Midway converted a 4th and 10 and Hubert scored on the next play. Texas High was quick to answer behind the powerful running of sophomore Cody Sutton, he would lead the Tigers down the field and junior QB Nathan Sorenson would score on a one yard sneak to tie it up at seven. Hubert would fumble on the next play and Texas High's Jacoby Thomas would recover.
Texas High however would not be able to cash in big on the mistake as on the prior possession it appeared Sutton was injured and he would not return. THS was now down to their fourth tailback of the year as the top two guys were out for the season. The Tigers were forced to rely on freshman Travis Turner who put out an admirable effort 15 carries for 52 yards but asking a freshman to carry the load turned the Tigers one dimensional and allowed Midway to pin their ears back and get after Sorenson. Austin Gibson would give the Tigers their only lead of the game nailing a 37 yard field goal on the drive to make it 10-7 after one quarter.
Midway would take the lead for good on the very next drive as Hubert would score on a sensational 14 yard run, breaking more than a few tackles on the way and it was 14-10 Panthers. Neither team would move the ball much for the remainder of the quarter as both teams traded interceptions.
The third quarter didn't feature much offense, but Texas High had a nice drive to open the half but Gibson missed a 30 yard field goal which seemed to take some wind out of the Tigers sails.
The knockout punch came early in the fourth quarter as the wheels started to fall off for Texas High, after a short punt and a personal foul penalty on the return Midway had great field position. Texas High appeared to hold Midway to a field goal after an incompletion on third and long. However after the play THS DB Roderick Collier wanted an offensive interference penalty, but when he didn't get it he continued to voice his displeasure and was flagged for an unsportsman like conduct penalty and was ejected. This gave Midway a first and goal and QB Cody Sutton would hook up with Graham for a 13 yard touchdown pass and a 21-10 lead.
Texas High would try to answer driving to the Midway 25, but the Panthers defense forced the Tigers out on downs. The backbreaker came on the first play of the next drive as Hubert broke off a 70 yard touchdown run sealing the deal. Midway added one more score for good measure with Graham hauling in a touchdown pass from Sutton for the final margin of 35-10.
Next week Waco Midway takes on 11-1 Highland Park on Friday at 2:00pm at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana in a Class 4A Region II Division I Regional Semi-Final.
