Cisco Pulls Away Late For 42-25 Win

Cisco recovered from four first half turnovers to pull away from a scrappy Lubbock Roosevelt squad for a 42-25 win on Saturday night at the Mustang Bowl.

SWEETWATER- For one half it appeared the Cisco Loboes (12-1) would be in deep trouble as the upset minded Lubbock Roosevelt Eagles (8-5) held a 25-22 halftime lead. However in the second half Cisco's playoff experience came shining through as the Loboes outscored RHS 20-0 in the second half for a 42-25 win. CHS racked up 368 yards rushing in the win as in the second half Cisco's offensive line simply took over and the defense finally stepped up and slowed Roosevelt down. Cisco's four first half turnovers didn't help matters either as RHS converted those into fourteen points.

Cisco jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on a short three yard touchdown run by Robert Medina, the Loboes score was set up on a couple of big pass plays from QB Josh Bridges. Roosevelt would have an answer scoring on a four yard run from QB Brian Poynor to tie it up at seven. The turnover bug would strike Cisco on their next drive as Medina fumbled and Roosevelt DB Benji Cranston would pounce on the loose ball and Coby Torres would cash the gift in on a six yard run and 14-7 Lubbock Roosevelt lead.

Cisco would tie it up early in the second quarter as bruising fullback Bradley Toler scored on a four yard run. Cisco appeared to have some momentum as they forced a Roosevelt punt but on the ensuing possession the shotgun snap flew over Bridges head and Roosevelt's Coby Torres pounced on the loose ball at the Cisco 14. Poynor would score for the Eagles on the next play from 14 yards out and Roosevelt would go up 22-14 as Jared Wilhoit hooked up with Poynor for the two point conversion.

Cisco continued to suffer from the turnover bug as on their first play of the next drive, Bridges would fumble stretching for extra yardage and Kevin Fowler would recover for Lubbock Roosevelt. Cisco's defense would hold this time and it appeared they had momentum back. That momentum carried over as Toler scored on a 60 yard jaunt up the middle, the Loboes tied it up at 22 as Medina scored on the two point try. Lubbock Roosevelt would get the lead back right before halftime as Ryan Davis kicked a 33 yard field goal right before halftime for a 25-22 halftime lead.

The turnover bug struck Lubbock Roosevelt on their first drive as it appeared the Eagles were en route to another score but a bobbled snap was recovered by Cisco DB Cory Pippen. Cisco would however fumble it right back to RHS as DB Jamar Anderson pounced on the fumble by FB Bradley Toler.

The Loboes defense held and then the ground game finally started to wear the Eagles down as a mix of Medina, Toler, Bridges and Vegas Hastings kept Lubbock Roosevelt off balance. Medina capped the drive scoring from six yards out and CHS led 29-25 after three quarters. The Loboes would salt the game away midway through the fourth quarter as backup FB Trever Honea on his only carry of the game scored on a 39 yard run to extend the lead to 36-25. Bridges added a late nine yard scoring run to round out the tally at 42-25.

Next week Cisco takes on Idalou in a Class 2A Division II State Quarter-Final at a time and location to be determined.
