Everman Escapes Stephenville Upset Bid

Everman fell behind 17-0 early in the second quarter but rebounded to knock off a game Stephenville squad 27-24 as Cory Franklin scored an offensive and defensive touchdown to lead Everman to the State Semi-Finals.

WACO-Sophomore RB Cory Franklin scored on an 11 yard run with less than seven minutes remaining to propel the Everman Bulldogs (14-0) to a 27-24 win over the Stephenville Yellow Jackets (10-4) in a Class 4A Region 1 Division II Championship game at Waco ISD Stadium.

Franklin who was subbing for the injured Ryan Smith had six carries for 41 yards in the fourth quarter, including several key third down conversions on the ground to help Everman salt the game away late. The sophomore also contributed on the defensive side of the ball returning a Brad Picha fumble 11 yards for a score in the second quarter to give Everman their first lead at 21-17, the fumble was forced by DE Keith Rushton who broke through and made the huge defensive play.

Stephenville scored on their first three possessions and jumped out to a quick 17-0 lead early in the second quarter. On the first drive the Jackets moved 81 yards quickly scoring on Brad Mills six yard run. The score was set up on a 61 yard pass from Picha to a wide open Daniel Noland. Picha scored from one yard out on the second drive after forcing an Everman three and out to give Stephenville a 14-0 lead after one quarter, the drive was set up by a 14 yard Deantre Harlan punt.

The tide began to turn early in the second quarter as Everman's defense finally made a play as they held Stephenville to just a chip shot 18 yard field goal by German Chavarria. Stephenville had moved the ball inside the Everman one yard line, but Stephenville elected to try the chip shot field goal instead of risk it on fourth and goal.

Everman's offense would get untracked on their third drive as Marcus McAdoo hooked up with Chris Franklin for a 34 yard touchdown pass, Franklin would end the game with 8 receptions for 110 yards. On the ensuing drive after forcing a Stephenville punt, Devin Woods who finished with 120 yards on the ground broke loose for a 62 yard touchdown run and all of a sudden the lead was cut to 17-14. Franklin's big defensive touchdown would give Everman their first lead at 21-17.

Stephenville appeared to be on their way to taking the lead in the third quarter, but Picha was picked off by backup DB Terrance King deep in Everman territory. The Jackets would take the lead after a scoreless third quarter on Mills' second touchdown run from two yards out to make it 24-21. Everman would respond with a huge 11 play 80 yard drive, capped by Cory Franklin's run for the winning margin. Stephenville would be forced to punt on their next drive and Everman would run the remaining time out as they moved the ball inside the Stephenville five yard line before taking a knee. Franklin and Woods would get a couple of key third down conversions on the ground to prevent Stephenville from getting the ball back.

The win is the fourth in a row for Everman over Stephenville, next week Everman plays Sulphur Springs in a Class 4A Division II State Semi-Final on Saturday at Texas Stadium at a time to be determined.
