The way that we define MVP at TexasPrepInsider.com is the player that means the most to their team - and without him - the team would not be nearly as strong. That is no clearer than John Hubert. The first week of the season was their only loss until the last week of the season - in the regional finals. That game - they did not have the services of John Hubert. One game where he went out at halftime - they looked like a shell of a team. They had lots of great supporting players - but no one meant more to their team than John Hubert.
The offensive player of the year this year is DJ Jones from Denison. We chose him over severla other players simply because of his eyepopping numbers - including a 400 yard performance. He has set records as a junior, and we can't wait to see what he does as a senior. We try to keep only regular season performances in mind out of fairness.
One of the big catalysts to Rockwall Heath's run this year to the state quarterfinals was the linebacker play - and the best of the best for Rockwall-Heath was Austin Moss. He was a game changer as he always flew to the ball. He made his teammates better and showed exemplary leadership on the field.
The sophomore of the year, Trevone Boykins, helped West Mesquite make the playoffs and showed how important quarterback play was to the Wrangler system.
The coach of the year is Denton Guyer's JW Walsh. He turned around a program that was 1-19 over the last two seasons to a 13-2 state semifinalist. Can't argue with those numbers!
