There is usually plenty of firepower in the Houston ISD 5A district 20. So, is 2009 the year that Bellaire finds its way into postseason play? Coach Jeff Walker welcomes back 10 (8 OFF, 2 DEF) starters from last year's squad.

In 2008, 3-6 is how the Cardinals finished. Clearly, these guys would not like to repeat that. And with leader and quarterback Adrian Nelson (6-4, 190) in the shotgun, their future is in good hands. Nelson was 86-of-181 for 1,144 yards and nine touchdowns to four interceptions.

Nelson will have a couple of his proven targets returning as well with receivers Derwyn Lauderdale (5-10, 179) and Chris Hensley (5-7, 160) on the edges. Lauderdale had 34 catches for 580 yards and seven touchdowns while Hensley hauled in 19 receptions for 169 yards and a score.

Also in the backfield, running back Eric Deveaux (5-10, 187) returns for the Cardinals after rushing for 543 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore. The Cardinals will have Joe Okaphor (6-6, 245), Juan Rodriguez (6-0, 268), Matt Simonotte (6-2, 242), Anthony Landry (6-3, 281), and Ray Holloway (6-3, 287) opening the holes and providing the protection up front.

On defense the Cardinals do not have a lot coming back, but do have linebacker Keith Ewing and cornerback Laurence Syon returning. Ewing started last season as a freshman and Syon had three interceptions last season.
