Houston teams fare well in 7-on-7 action

It was the state's best 7-on-7 squads battling it out at the blistering heat at the FOX Sports Southwest 7-on-7 State Championship presented by adidas and Academy Sports & Outdoors. Here is a quick rundown of the Houston area teams and how the championship teams fared.

With 64 of the top teams from across the state of Texas in summer 7-on-7 action, the teams from the Greater Houston area did not have a bad showing at Day 1 of the FOX Sports Southwest 7-on-7 State Championship presented by adidas and Academy Sports & Outdoors.

Of the 32 teams placed in the championship bracket, 11 are from the Houston area. Clearly the most impressive for the day was the play of Cy Fair ISD school Jersey Village, which went 3-0 on the day.

Undefeated
The Falcons opened up with a 1-point win over Copperas Cove followed by a 32-27 win over Southlake Carroll. Then with a 34-27 win over JJ Pearce, the Falcons open up Saturday morning at 9 a.m. to play another Houston area team, Klein.

Slow start, finish strong
Speaking of Klein, the Bearkats opened the day with a 32-27 loss to Lake Travis, but stormed back to earn wins over Lakeview (33-20) and El Paso Bel Air (41-28). Katy, Cy Fair and Spring all finished 2-1 and lost its opening game and rebounded to land a spot in the championship bracket.

Close, but not quite
After starting off with a bang, the squads from Houston Bellaire and Pearland Dawson were much too close to being mentioned with Jersey Village. For the Cardinals, wins over Cedar Hill (44-40) and Vista Ridge (34-26) had these guys on high looking at a pool play sweep. But in the final game against Denton Guyer, they slipped up and lost a close one 47-44.

In the case of Dawson, a 45-39 win over Stratford and decisive 40-19 win over Cedar Park was about as good a start as a team could get. But in the last pool play game against Arlington Lamar, Dawson fell by one point, 28-27.

Pool play in the championship division starts at 9 a.m. Saturday morning while the consolation begins at 8 a.m. One-game elimination is in effect for Saturday's action.
