Edwards taking things in stride

While we love bringing you a good portion of high school news and updates, we also want to feature some of the state's top athletes. Today, we feature Alvin Manvel wide receiver Saqwan Edwards.

Already labeled by Texas Prep Insider as one of the best wide receivers in the area who is not ranked, Alvin Manvel's Saqwan Edwards has been putting in the work on the field. And though the Mavericks record may not indicate that now, Edwards said it's time for the mid season push.

"We are going to bounce back and fight our way into the playoffs," Edwards said of the team's 2-3 record (0-2 in district play). "We are going to get everything together."

Through the five games, the 6-foot, 170-pound Edwards has been the go-to guy when the ball goes airborne. Right now, Edwards has 27 receptions for 508 yards and six touchdowns.

With that level of play there's no wonder he has a handful of colleges trying to get his signature foe February 2010.

"I have offers from UTEP, Tulsa, Colorado and Stephen F. Austin State," Edwards said. "I just got back from UTEP and I am going to SFA this weekend."

Edwards spoke briefly about the visit to El Paso.

"It was nice, but it was different out there," Edwards said. "But the game was wonderful. The Sun Bowl is in the middle of the mountains. I enjoyed being on campus and the players and coaches were nice."

The Mavericks looks to earn their first district win this Friday when they take on Texas City.
