QB leads Hungry team to Bi-District Win

While we love bringing you a good portion of high school news and updates, we also want to feature some of the state's top athletes. Today, we feature Coldspring-Oakhurst quarterback Chad Allen.

For many years now, the Coldspring-Oakhurst football team has been eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of powerhouse Class 3A program West Orange-Stark. But in 2009, the tides have turned.

Fueled by the game play of quarterback Chad Allen, the Trojans bounced back to handle their playoff rival 41-36 last Friday at Huffman Stadium.

"Feels good. The last three years they have beat us pretty bad. To come out this year and win is good," Allen said. "We were a little nervous during the pre game, but we knew we had the strength to beat them."

And the first half of the game proved that. The Trojans scored on the first two drives of the game with the 5-foot-11, 173-pound Allen taken care of things in the ground game. His first score was from 5 yards and the second from 19 yards.

The ability to move the ball on what the West Orange community calls ‘the Chain Gang' was somewhat shocking to Allen at first. But he credited that to the preparation they had coming into this match up.

"We got a lot of looks in practice this past week with our scout team," Allen said "That helped us with our reads and it helped here tonight."

On the night, Allen finished with 270 yards of total offense, 140 of those through the air, mainly to receiver Sherman Gilbert. Allen accounted for four touchdowns in the win.

That level of play has brought about some awareness to college coaches, but Allen admits that there is one that stands out amongst the rest.

"I am still waiting on an offer, but there are a few schools recruiting me," Allen said. "Can't really think of them right now, but I am hearing a lot from Lamar. We talk quite a bit and they seem real interested. They want me to play defensive back from them."

But for now, it's all about the Trojans and next up is Rockdale. This area round playoff game will be played at Conroe ISD Buddy Moorhead Stadium Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

"We are hungry. We want to work hard everyday and keep winning," Allen said.
