State Previews: SPSL North

ESP takes a tour around the state of Washington looking at impact players as well conference favorites…

The first stop of the state tour is the SPSL North. Kentwood was the jewel of the conference last season, but will face heavy competition in their attempt to repeat…

Players to Watch

QB/LB Caleb Saulo-12-Kentlake
Saulo leads the conference favorite Falcons on both sides of the ball. Saulo plays quarterback, where his athleticism and size set him apart from the rest of the league. Saulo is being recruited by colleges to play linebacker, his more natural position.

DB/WR Austin Pernell-12-Kentlake
Pernell is a force on both sides of the ball. The talented prospect is committed to WSU to play baseball.

OL Cory English-12- Auburn
English is one of the better linemen in the state of Washington. He holds offers from Idaho, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State.

LB Tim Laufatasaga-12-Jefferson
Named First team all-league for a team last season for a Jefferson squad not usually known for producing talent.

TE Caleb Smith-12- Kentridge
Smith committed to Oregon State earlier this month. He will be making the move from quarterback to tight end this season. He should be one of the more intriguing prospects to watch.

S Jake Zylstra-12-Kentridge
Zylstra is a lanky player in the secondary that will be one of the Chargers top tacklers. The KR defense has been among the best in the conference the last few seasons.

LB James Hatfield-12- Kentwood
Hatfield was a first team all-league selection as a junior.

DB Jason Smith-12-Tahoma
Smith was a bright spot on a Tahoma team that struggled to a 2-6 league record last year.

Top Games

9/2, Kentridge @ Auburn
9/30, Kentwood @ Auburn
10/7, Kentlake @ Kentwood
10/13, Auburn @ Kentlake
10/28, Kentwood @ Kentridge

Conference Prediction

SPSL North Champ: Kentlake

As an alumnus it hurts me to say it, but it appears the SPSL North isn't just down for another season. The league that regularly competed for state titles last decade has had issues making deep playoff runs the past few years. The SPSL North doesn't seem to possess the talent that it used to. The league is completely up in the air this season. Kentlake has the best athletes in the conference and is my favorite to win. The Falcons will have to get past rival Kentwood, who is the most consistent of the North programs. Kentridge has made a change at quarterback and will be competitive so long as their offense can put points on the board. Auburn lost a lot of talent to graduation, probably too much to make a run at the title.

As always, there are many more that could have made the list. Visit our forums to let me know who else you think should have made the list.
