Team Spotlight: Granger Spartans

Coach David Gibb at Granger has to be chomping at the bit to get the 2003-2004 season tipped off. The Spartan mentor has a ton of guys back and is primed for a trip to Yakima's SunDome for the Class 1A State Tournament.

Scoring should be no problem for Gibb's team. Three of those starters averaged double digits in scoring during their 16-8 campaign last season.

6-4 senior Chris Cardenas averaged 16.1 points with 9 boards and 5 assists as a junior. 5-7 senior guard Robert Cardenas came in with 14.1 points per night to go along with 3 dimes while 5-10 senior Heraclio Deleon added 11.3 points with 7 rebounds and a pair of assists each night out.

Add to that 5-11 senior Jonathan Golob (4.1 ppg.), 5-11 senior Jordan Golob (5.1 ppg/3.0rpg.) and 5-11 senior Hugo Camarillo (4.2 ppg.). 6-3 senior Colton Carpenter and 6-1 senior Tim Haley also return.

Moving up and expected to make significant contributions are 6-2 junior Sean Golob and 5-5 sophomore Edward Castro.

Granger just missed a trip to state last year. They last went to the show in 2003 after bringing home the 8th place trophy in 2001.

The general consensus is that the SCAC is shaping up as a battle between the Spartans and Zillah.
