Team Spotlight: Zillah Leopards

Coach Doug Burge at Zillah is a lucky guy. After all, he has all five starters back, and four of them were all-league picks at some level a year ago as the Leopards made another trip to the SunDome for the 1A state tournament.

6-0 junior guard Duran Torrez (11ppg) was a first team All-SCAC pick a year ago. 5-9 senior guard Kelly Anderson (7ppg/6apg) and 6-2 senior post Justin Ross (10ppg/9rpg) both were named to the second team. 5-11 senior guard Drew Affholter (10ppg) picked up honorable mention all-league. The fifth starter, 6-2 senior forward Nick Collins, averaged 7 points withy 7 rebounds a year ago.

Burge is expecting 6-1 sophomore Andy Jones and 6-4 junior Jesse Wiley to add depth.

"We have a very experienced team," Burge commented of this squad's strength. "We were 16-11 with this group last year and won a game at state," he added. "We will also benefit from our quickness and competitiveness."

A lack of size and an unproven bench are concerns for the coach.

Of his team's off season work Burge told us, "we didn't play well. We missed many kids due to summer baseball and other commitments."

As for the SCAC picture Burge was quick to point out; "the favorite should be Granger. We'll be right there with all our guys back. White Swan lost some key players but will still be solid."

And as far as his pick for the 1A state title, like everyone else we have talked to Burge minced no words; "Is there any doubt about Brewster again!" He named Seattle Christian, King's and Napavine as others who will be in the hunt.
