Class 4A Pre-Season Rankings

Kentwood finished third at state last year and returns a bunch. Take a look at who else could be sitting pretty come state tournament time in the state's largest classification.

Pre-season rankings really don't mean much but they're fun and we like to have a little fun from time to time.

When doing these fun things you have a look at how a team did last year, who they have coming back, how their young guys looked during the summer, how they played during the summer and, in some cases, you just expect certain programs to continue to be good based on their tradition (think Rainier Beach, Mercer Island, Franklin etc).

We also talked to coaches and got their thoughts on who the "contenders" were.

Remember it's all about having a little fun and getting folks to start thinking about the upcoming basketball season. Don't take things too seriously, please!

Here is our pre-season top-10 in Class 4A.

1. Kentwood- 26-3/14-2 Conqs got to the semifinals last year and return their top gun, 6-3 guard Rodney Stuckey (22.1ppg). Coach Dean Montzingo's guys won a ton during the summer and fall.

2. Mount Tahoma- Barre and Gary Ward along with 6-6 forward Julio Feliciano return and are on a mission to insure a repeat last year's playoff disappointment does not happen again.

3. Bethel- Four sophomores played major rolls last year as the 22-6/14-2 Braves once again did the T-Dome. Coach Pat Mullen has size, speed, experience, a talented point guard, some outstanding athletes, some shooters, some bangers, ah heck, he's loaded. All he needs is some depth.

4. Franklin- Yeah, yeah, yeah. Aaron Brooks, Kellen Williams, Ricky Washington, Zenrique Tellez and Darryl Taylor all graduated from the state champs. So what! Coach Jason Kerr not only has a new bride, but a bunch of young studs in waiting. Speed kills!

5. Prairie- Coach Kyle Brooks' Falcons were back at state last March and return 6-6 senior forward Devon Uskoski along with other big bodies.

6. South Kitsap- The Wolves are not all about football any more. Coach John Callaghan's bigs Jake Beittinger and Adam Bennett lead the run for more hardware.

7. Shorewood- Coach Jeff Denny returns a ton led by 6-6 junior forward Rob Diederichs.

8. Kent-Meridian- Legendary coach Al Hairston takes over at K-M and he has a very nice squad led by 6-2 junior guard Steffon Johnson and All-League pick Joey Luke.

9. Auburn- Coach Ryan Hansen has big time scorer Dan Stafford back. Trojans had a solid summer and look to be ready for prime time.

10A. Redmond- Coach Michael Kelly returns four starters led by 6-8 All-KingCo pick Stephen Ishmael.

10B. Snohomish- Jon "the Beast" Brockman may be able to carry Coach Bone and the Panthers by himself. Had older brother Paul not gone down, Snoho would have been a top-5 squad. They may be yet, but there are a whole lot of question marks in the back court.
