Cold outside, red hot in the gym

Burrrrrr! It is some kinda cold outside all over the state. But ballers from corner to corner heated it up inside the gym Saturday. I was surrounded by ice on my "Rock" and was not able to get further than the edge of the village so I missed my planned trip to Tacoma for the South Sound Classic.

But my hook-up made it and fired me a long e-mail late last night with all the gory details.

It all started with a no-show as Evergreen did the smart thing and stayed home in Vancouver, avoiding the ice rink that was I-5. In their place Enumclaw filled in nicely and put the ice on Fife in a 44-16 "ho-hummer." Fife couldn't drop it in the ocean. Calvin Saylor had 10 points to lead the Claw.

Next up was a pair of small schools. 2A Steilacoom took care of lil brother 1A Life Christian 56-38 as Michael Lewis scored 16. The Sents are 6-1.

2A number-1 Hoquiam broke away from Lincoln late to knock off the 4A Abes 58-47. Senior guard Justin Reed scored 19 with big 6-6 senior David Brittinen adding 14. Then Griz are 6-0. Junior Demmery had 14 in the loss.

6-1 Olympia held off Garfield 55-49. Jason Briggs and Brett Stuckey scored 17 each. Omar Thompson had 21 for the Dogs.


In the night cap Bethel stayed unbeaten, getting by Gig Harbor 52-39. Jordan Sutton scored 19. 6-8 junior Brandon Moore added 11 and 6-3 junior Jamil Turner 10 as the Braves did it their way, spreading the scoring. 6-7 soph Ryan Christiansen scored 17 and 6-6 senior Bill Forelli added 14 for the Tides.

9-1 Rainier Beach beat another nationally ranked opponent, taking care of Bakersfield (California) 45-42 at the Pangos Dream Classic at UCLA. It was hyped as a battle of bugs with the Vike's 6-11 C.J. Giles going against one of the top-rated big men in the land 7-1 Robert Swift. But it was 6-6 junior PG Terrance Williams who led all scorers, canning 17. Giles had a d-d with 11 points and 15 boards. He also rejected five of Swift's shots. Swift scored 14.

Super-stud Marvin Williams scored 29 and super-sized his double-double with 20 boards as Bremerton blasted North Kitsap 85-58. Marvin added 6 swats and 5 dimes. Garrett McKinstry had 31 in the loss.

Senior guard Larod Lover scored 11 of his 18 in the fourth quarter as 6-1 Meadowdale topped 5-1 Edmonds-Woodway 44-37 in the WesCo South.

6-1 Lake Stevens beat Monroe 63-48 in the WesCo North. Matt Stevens scored 18 and fellow senior Tyler Long had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

5-1 Kamiak beat Shorewood 70-61. Tyler Martinez scored 27.


6-8 junior Tommy Craddock (pictured at right) scored 19 and got the d-d with 11 rebounds as Mariner took care of Shorecrest 63-45. Delvaughn Tinned added 18 points for the Mariners. 6-7 junior Rob Diederichs had 21 in the loss.

Newport edged King's 55-54 in OT. 6-5 senior Bryce Daub popped in 24. Senior guard Chris Faidley had 22 in the loss. King's hosts Chinook rival Seattle Christian Tuesday night. Those two always provide good games.

And over the mountains in Eastern Washington's Mid-Valley League, 6-0 West Valley hammered Hanford 63-39. 6-8 senior Andrew Strait scored 28 and Corey Wehr added 20. 6

-0 Selah popped Prosser 74-37. 6-3 senior guard Erik Bell had 21 and Chris Miller added 15.

6-1 Grandview beat Sunnyside 73-58. Anthony Andrews 19.

5-1 Ellensburg beat Wapato 69-55. Josh Griffith scored 19 and Andy Aaron added 15. I

n the Battle of Yakima, Davis stayed perfect at 6-0 and took care of cross-town rival Eisenhower 74-66. Humberto Perez scored 23 and Jeremy Mangum added 20. The Pirates hit 9 of 10 from the line in the final minute. 6-7 Branden Johnson scored 17 and Brett Gordon 16 in the loss.
