State Tournament predictions, 4A to B

Sure there are some rankings out there. But do they mean anything? Nope. It's all about getting into the league and district playoffs and stepping up. That, plus a little luck here and there, toss in some surprises, and when they sit down in the offices of the WIAA to draw the tournament fields you always have a few teams there that make you scratch your head and say hmmmm.

I thought I'd go out on a limb and see how I could do picking the 16-team fields for the various state tournaments. If your team isn't in my draw, don't get mad, step it up a notch and prove me wrong. Feel free to use this as motivation. You can thank me later.

So for all those mommies who get mad, and mad mommies are almost as dangerous as mad cows, here's your chance to spit and stomp.

In 4A the District breakdown goes like this:

District, Member League(s), Teams to State

District 1, WesCo, 2 berths

And the survey says… Lake Stevens and Mountlake Terrace. Mariner, Edmonds-Woodway, Snohomish, Kamiak and Mount Vernon could be in if…

District 2, KingCo, 2 berths

Franklin and Redmond. But dang, Bothell, Inglemoor, Lake Washington and Roosevelt could be there as well

And I'll inject here, the KingCo and WesCo athletic directors need to get off their butts, work out their petty differences and get back to a Bi- District format. It is time for the four best teams in these two Districts to get to state. That has not happened since their feud started several years ago.

District 3/4, Narrows/SPSL/Greater St. Helens, 8 berths

Kentwood, Bethel, Mount Tahoma, Evergreen, Prairie, Olympia, Auburn, Bellarmine Prep. But there are always surprises in this mother of all District tournaments. Kent-Meridian, Puyallup, South Kitsap, Enumclaw, Rogers and a few others will have a big say in who goes, who sits at home.

District 5/6/8, Big Nine/Greater Spokane, 4 berths

Davis, Walla Walla, Richland, Lewis and Clark. This could be a Big Nine sweep kinda year depending on how the GSL playoffs go.

In 3A the crystal ball says:

District 1, WesCo, Northwest, 3 berths

Bellingham, Squalicum and Meadowdale. For those three keep in mind Sehome is there if you come to District not ready to play. And beware of Sedro-Woolley…

District 2, KingCo, Metro, 4 berths

Rainier Beach, Mercer Island, O'Dea and Seattle Prep if Martel Webster is back and healthy. If he is not, Cleveland goes to state.

District 3, Seamount, 3 berths

Renton, Clover Park and Sequim.

District 4, Greater St. Helens, PAC-9, 3 berths

Mark Morris, Columbia River and North Thurston. A GSHL sweep at Districts would not be a huge surprise..

District 5/8, Mid Valley, Greater Spokane, 3 berths

Clarkston, West Valley (Yak) and West Valley (Spo). Grandview, Selah and Ellensburg wait of either of the big three falters.

In Class 2A is goes:

District 1, North Cascades, 3 berths

Blaine, Meridian and Mount Baker. No wait; make that Nooksack, Meridian and Lynden Christian. Oh hell, how about Blaine, Nooksack and LC? Get your tickets for District now, it's going to be out-freakin'-standing. But for real, I'll say Blaine, Nooksack and Mount Baker.

District 3, Nisqually, 3 berths

Steilacoom, Eatonville and Foster.

And I'll take a shot here…Why the heck did they quit playing Bi- District between the Nisqually and NCC? What a great year this would have been for them to get it back together. Arrrrgh!!!!

District 4, SW Washington, 4 berths

Hoquiam, Ilwaco, Ridgefield and Castle Rock.

District 5/6, CWAC , 4 berths

Cashmere, Chelan, Kiona-Benton and Connell.

District 7, Great Northern, 2 berths

Chewelah and Medical Lake. Pullman's there so be careful. And maybe this is a year when the CWAC or SW Washington could give up a berth to the GNL…or NCC

And in Class 1A it's looking like:

District 1/2/3, Northwest,Emerald City, Chinook, 6 berths

Bellevue Christian, Seattle Christian, King's, University Prep, Archbishop Murphy and Coupeville

District 4, SW Washington, 4 berths

Onalaska, Napavine, Toledo and North Beach

District 5, SCAC, 3 berths

Zillah, Granger and White Swan

District 6/7, Caribou Trail, Northeast, 3 berths

Brewster, Freeman and Northwest Christian.

And in Class B it's:

District 1/2/3, Northwest, Sea-Tac, North Olympic, 4 berths

Darrington, Shoreline Christian, Lummi and Clallam Bay.

District 4, Central, Pacific, 2 berths

Wahkiakum and Willapa Valley.

District 5/6, Columbia, North Central WA, 4 berths

Riverside Christian, Trout Lake, La Salle and Waterville.

District 7, Panorama, Bi-County, 3 berths

Selkirk, Republic and Wellpinit.

District 9, Blue Mountain, Whitman County, 3 berths

Liberty Christian, LaCrosse-Washtucna and Waitsburg.

Don't blame me, it's Mother Nature's fault. She's snowed me in and I'm having cabin fever…. See ya at state.
