Friday Night Gridiron Star: FB Peter Nguyen

In this season's first installment of Friday night gridiron star, and unfamiliar face makes waves in a familiar place. Peter Nguyen was playing his first game at fullback, but adjusted well to the new victory by leading his team to victory.

In Coach Butch Goncharoff's wing T offense, there are plenty of opportunities for the players in the Bellevue back field. That back field has produced such runners as J.R. Hasty and Keith Rosenberg, and continues to dominate by finding production in new contributors. This week, it was senior fullback Peter Nguyen who led the way, as Bellevue rolled to a 34-13 victory over ninth ranked Issaquah.

On Bellevue's second offensive play of the night, Nguyen sped through the Issaquah defense, and in a blink of an eye, was streaking down the left sideline for an eighty yard touchdown. As the game went on, Nguyen continued to produce, prompting one Bellevue team photographer to tell quarterback Tommy Castle his own version of the game plan.

"Just keep giving him the ball, Tommy. Let him do his thing," said the Wolverine fan.

That formula worked for Bellevue as continued to call Nguyen's number. He answered the call time and time again out of the backfield and on kick returns, and finished the night with 276 all purpose yards and four touchdowns.

Nguyen's ability to draw the defense towards him allowed other Bellevue backs to produce as the game went on. On the night, the Wolverines amassed 421 yards on the ground, including 61 yards from Jamal Atofau and another 72 from Rusty Haehl. So, while there may be another star in the Wolverine backfield next week, it was Nguyen's time for Bellevue on Friday.
