ESP Interview: Drew Austin

Graham-Kapowsin QB takes the time to fill us in on his spring schedule…

Drew Austin is strong armed QB that led Graham-Kapowsin to the playoffs last season. We catch up with him as he prepares for his junior campaign.

What plans do you have this spring/summer?
The biggest thing I have on my schedule is the Clarkson passing camp. That is down in the rose bowl. I went last year and I thought it was a really good camp. I also work with Johnny DuRocher on a weekly basis.

You mentioned you are working with Johnny DuRocher, how has that been?
It's been real good, we work together every week. He has a great personality so that makes it fun. It is easy learning from someone who you like to be around. He can joke around but also be serious when he needs to be.

What specifically are you trying to improve on?
The two most important for me are footwork, so I can be faster at getting away from the defense and Accuracy. I think my accuracy is getting better but it is always something you can improve on. Also the mental side of the game, reading defenses so that I can pick things up faster.

How are you feeling about your junior season?
Feeling really confident. Thomas Gomez is a really good offensive lineman that we have coming back. Also Jamaal Jones is coming back. Camaraderie is really important and we have been spending a bunch of time together. Team camaraderie matters, were almost like a family.

You mentioned Jamaal, must be nice throwing to one of the state's best WR's?
It's pretty cool. He is really good. I actually just got done throwing with him. He called me today to work out, shows you his work ethic.

Do you play other sports or just training for next season?
I'll be playing baseball this spring for the school team.

Graham-Kapowsin will be a force in the SPSL South this season and I wouldn't be surprised if their junior gunslinger leads them deep into the state playoffs.
