WIAC Names Top Hoopsters

UW-Oshkosh guard Matt Miller and UW-Whitewater center Tiffany Morton helped their teams finish a combined 6-1 during the past two weeks to earn WIAC honors in men's and women's basketball, respectively.

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association has announced its top athletes for the period from Dec. 22-Jan. 4:

Men's basketball

UW-Oshkosh senior guard Matt Miller of Hudson earned honors after averaging 23 point per game as the Titans won three contests in the Cactus Jam tournament in Phoenix and dropped a 74-65 decision to UW-Stevens Point in league play.

Miller was perfect on 20 free-throw attempts and drilled 54.5 percent from beyond the three-point arc (18 of 33), adding 14 rebounds, eight assists and five steals.

He gained most valuable player honors in the Cactus Jam, helping UW-O to the event championship. Miller's performances included a career-high 34-point effort during an 89-80 victory over the College of Westbury (N.Y.), which featured six treys and a 14-of-14 showing at the charity stripe. He also had 26- and 13-point outings.

Miller then registered 19 points against the fifth-ranked Pointers.

Other nominees included UW-La Crosse junior guard Trevor Stratton of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, UW-Platteville junior guard Mike Shaw of Madison Edgewood, UW-River Falls sophomore forward Jake Voeltz of River Falls, UW-Stevens Point sophomore forward Louis Hurd of Portage and UW-Whitewater senior guard Myles McKay of Menomonee Falls.

Women's basketball

Senior center Tiffany Morton, a product of Beloit Memorial, was recognized after helping UW-Whitewater to three victories.

Morton averaged 21.3 points and 14.7 rebounds per game in wins against Union College (N.Y.), Calvin College (Mich.) and UW-River Falls.

Morton accumulated 27 points and 16 boards in a 79-68 triumph against Union, connecting on 10 of 15 field-goal attempts and 7 of 10 free throws. She then recorded 14 points and hauled in 19 rebounds against Calvin. Morton ended her wonderful run with 23 points and nine rebounds, including five on the offensive end, in the league victory over the Falcons.

Morton also combined for eight blocked shots in the three games.

UW-Eau Claire senior guard Heidi Arciszewski of Thorp, UW-La Crosse senior forward Mackenzie Hunter of Eau Claire Regis, UW-Oshkosh sophomore guard Erin Baganz of Ashwaubenon, UW-Platteville senior forward Lisa Grantman of Lomira and UW-Stevens Point sophomore guard Andrea Flease of New London were among the other nominees.
