Tip Trader: Reducing Dryer Fire Risk

Handyman Club members share their home and workshop hints.

Club member Samantha Vine of Tacoma, Washington, uses a small towel secured to a sewer snake to keep her concealed dryer duct clean and to reduce the risk of fire. She feeds the snake into the duct at the dryer connection until it reaches the vent. Then she secures the towel by twisting it onto the snake’s spiral end and taping it in place. Carefully, Samantha stuffs the towel into the duct and retracts the towel from the dryer end while rotating the snake handle. Then she directs a leaf blower toward the duct opening to blow out any dislodged lint.
