Mississippi Gulf Coast Edges Past Jones Co.

ELLISVILLE – It was a tale of two halves between the No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs and Jones County Bobcats. JCJC led 24-14 midway through the second quarter, but the Bulldogs scored the game's final 17 points and posted a 31-24 decision before an estimated crowd of 6,000 fans at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field on a warm Saturday night.

Livingtson scored on a 25-yard pass reception from Tromarcus Toney and with the extra point the game would be tied at 14-14. Defending is Martez Thompson (5) and an unidentified MGCCC player.

It was also the South Division opener for both teams. Gulf Coast improves to 3-0 overall, 1-0 in the division, while the Bobcats drop to 1-2 overall, 0-1 in league play.

Jones posted some impressive numbers in the first half.

The Bobcats piled up 250 yards and 13 first downs. However, they were limited to only two first downs and 12 yards of offense in the second half. Jones, after not punting in the first half, punted seven times in the second half.

The game started off like a shootout with 35 points being scored in the first quarter.

Gulf Coast took the opening kickoff and quickly moved 72 yards in eight plays. Eric Wills took a handoff to his right and raced 20 yards for a score. Will Scott's conversion made it 7-0 with 12:26 showing.

The Bobcats immediately responded.

JCJC took the kickoff and drove 70 yards in 12 plays for a touchdown. Memphis sophomore quarterback Tromarcus Toney found Warner Robins, Ga., freshman wideout Rashad Wynes wide open down the middle for a 24-yard scoring strike. Dylan Sobiesk's extra point made it 7-7 with 7:43 left in the first quarter.

Gulf Coast came right back and moved 71 yards in six plays for their next score. Freshman quarterback Clayton Moore, who transferred to MGCCC from Ole Miss, connected with Javon Bell on a 46-yard touchdown pass. Scott's conversion made it 14-7 with 5:34 left.

The Bulldogs then tried to surprise the Bobcats by attempting an onsides kick. Gulf Coast recovered the ball, but it did not travel the necessary 10 yards and JCJC took over at the Bulldog 39-yard line.

Six plays later, facing a third and 8 situation, Toney was heavily pressured by the defense while attempting to pass. He managed to get away and fired the ball towards the goal line where South Jones' freshman tight end Keghan Livingston made the reception and scored. Sobiesk's conversion tied the game at 14-14 with 2:16 still remaining in the first quarter.

The Bobcat defense then stepped up and made a big play.

Two plays after the Sobiesk kickoff, Taylorville sophomore linebacker LeRoyce Keyes picked off a Moore pass and JCJC was in business at the Gulf Coast 41-yard line.

Three plays later, Quitman freshman running back DeAnthony Pickens took a handoff to his right, broke several tackles and scampered 23 yards for a touchdown. Sobiesk's PAT gave Jones a 21-14 lead with :08.5 seconds left in the first quarter.

JCJC then forced a ‘three and out' and took over on its own 46-yard line after a Gulf Coast punt.

The Bobcats moved all the way to a first and goal at the MGCCC 10-yard line. Facing a third and goal at the 2, JCJC was called for an illegal substitution and was penalized back to the 7. Backup quarterback Mitchell Brown entered in place of Toney, who had been shaken up on the previous play, and gained two yards to the 5.

On fourth down, Sobiesk, a freshman from Oak Grove, booted a 22-yard field goal to cap the 12-play drive and the Bobcats led 24-14 with 6:24 left in the first half.

The Bobcats then had a chance for a big defensive play.

Moore dropped back to pass and threw to his left. Linebacker Kewon Hunter had clear sailing for the end zone, but was unable to hold on to the possible interception near the Gulf Coast 35.

The Bulldogs then were able to move 62 yards in 10 plays before the drive stalled. Scott came in and booted a 30-yard field goal with 2:20 left to trim the JCJC lead to 24-17.

JCJC had another opportunity to add points before halftime.

The Bobcats moved from their own 25 to the Gulf Coast 28 in seven plays. The big play was a 23-yard completion from Toney to Bay Springs' freshman wide receiver Jonathan Ducksworth. However, Sobiesk's 45-yard field goal attempt was off to the right.

Gulf Coast got the ball at the 28 with :01.4 seconds left. Moore threw a ‘Hail Mary' pass deep downfield, but New Orleans' freshman Antonio Parker picked it off at his own 25 to end the half.

The Bulldogs got the momentum quickly in the second half.

Gulf Coast forced JCJC's first punt of the night and Quitman freshman Slater Smith - the state's leading punter - booted the ball 44 yards to the MGCCC 25. Otis Jacobs caught the punt and promptly returned it 75 yards for a touchdown. Scott's PAT tied the game at 24-24 with 12:48 left in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs would score what would prove to be the final points of the game on their next possession.

Gulf Coast would march 70 yards in eight plays with James Gillum ending the drive with a 2-yard run. Scott's kick made it 31-24 with 7:30 left in the third quarter.

On JCJC's next drive, the Bobcats picked up back-to-back first downs on a pass interference penalty and a 10-yard completion from Toney to Laurel sophomore wideout Kylan Pollard. But facing a third and 6 at the Gulf Coast 47, the ball was snapped over Toney's head and he ended up falling on it way back at his 28-yard line - a 25-yard loss.

Gulf Coast then had a chance to extend the lead on its next drive, but Scott's 39-yard field goal attempt bounced off the right upright and fell to the turf. On the Bulldogs' next drive, Scott misfired on a 41-yard field goal effort with 10:42 left.

Jones had to punt on its next three possessions, but eventually got the ball back at its own 27-yard line with 1:41 left. But MGCCC's Mario Gainer picked off a Toney pass and Gulf Coast took over at the JCJC 25 with 1:20 remaining.

The Bulldogs picked up a first down, ran out the clock and posted their seventh straight victory over JCJC.

Toney was 19-of-33 through the air for 206 yards, while Wynes had five receptions for 39 yards. Baton Rouge freshman Deuce Coon had two receptions for 36 yards.

Pickens rushed eight time for 50 yards.

The Bobcats had 56 yards rushing and 262 yards of offense.

Gillum rushed 23 times for 96 yards to top Gulf Coast, while Wills had 11 carries for 70 yards.

Moore was 9-of-19 through the air for 144 yards. Bell had two catches for 56 yards and Wills had one reception for 40 yards.

Gulf Coast had 19 first downs, 228 yards rushing and 372 yards of total offense.

Both teams resume division play this week.
