Bakersfield dominated play on both sides of the ball, particularly in the second half when the Renegades outscored Citrus, 37-0. The Bakersfield offense racked up nearly 500 total yards, while the Renegade defense held Citrus to just 111 yards, including 15 yards on the ground.
Citrus actually started off fairly well. The Owls took the game's opening kickoff and put together a 15-play drive that produced a 31-yard field goal from Eric De Lira to give the home team a 3-0 lead 5:35 into the first quarter.
That - and a dead-on impersonation by the school's jazz band of legendary hair-metal band Poison performing "Talk Dirty To Me" during halftime - would prove to be the highlight of the night for Citrus, however.
The Bakersfield offense answered with a 9-play, 79-yard drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by Dean-Johnson, giving the Renegades a 7-3 lead and all the points they would need for the win. Then after a Citrus punt, Bakersfield pushed its lead to 14-3 when Negron threw a short pass to Leandre West, who burst through the defense and turned it into a 43-yard touchdown early in the second quarter.
Citrus got a break midway through the second quarter when a fumble by West was recovered by Jarrod Zirkle at the Renegade 8. However, the Bakersfield defense minimized the damage, holding Citrus to just four yards in the next three plays before settling for a 21-yard field goal. That made it 14-6 with 6:36 left in the first half. But Bakersfield got a short field goal from Josh Gallington in the final seconds of the half to restore the 11-point margin at 17-6 at the break.
And the second half was all Bakersfield. The Renegades took the opening kickoff and quickly drove down the field for a score, driving 60 yards in just six plays. The score came on a spectacular catch when Brandon Hobdy hauled in a deflected ball in the back of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-6.
A pair of fumbles by Citrus quickly allowed Bakersfield to put the game out of reach. One was recovered by Bakersfield's Tierney Yates at the Renegade 43; Dean-Johnson scored on a 49-yard run three plays later to make it 30-6. Then after the Citrus defense forced a punt, a muff of the kick was recovered by Bakersfield's Jacob Adelman at the Owl 6 and Negron scored on a keeper three plays later to make it 37-6.
The issue was decided at that point, but Bakersfield didn't stop scoring. A 46-yard field goal by Gallington made it 40-6 early in the fourth quarter. Andre Smith scored on a 3-yard run midway through the final quarter and reserve quarterback Byron Campbell scored on a 6-yard run with 4:01 left to round out the scoring.
For Bakersfield, Negron completed 11 of 20 passes for 222 yards and 2 touchdowns, and also rushed for 62 yards on 9 carries and another score. Dean-Johnson topped the century mark with 101 yards on 11 carries and scored twice. Hobdy led all receivers with 5 catches and had the highlight of the night with his touchdown catch. Loren Kolb had 3 catches for 81 yards. Rane Cravens led the defense, registering 2 of the Renegades' 6 quarterback sacks on the night.
Bakersfield returns home next week to face #1-ranked and defending state and national champion Mt. San Antonio at 6 pm Saturday in one of the most-anticipated match-ups of the season so far. Citrus travels to San Bernardino Valley to face the Wolverines, also at 6 pm.
