Simmons has some options

Heading into the season, one of the top returning defensive prospects in the JUCO ranks this season was Blinn LB Dexrell Simmons (6-0, 210) and his performance this season has done nothing to diminish that standing. JCFootball.com caught up with the sure-tackling defender and he updated us on things including which two schools have shown the most interest this season...

"Things have gone well this season," Simmons told JCFootball.com recently. "I think I've played exactly how I expected to play and we still have our bowl game on December 4th before our season ends."

As a freshman last fall, Simmons played the strongside (SAM) linebacker position for the Buccaneers and was outstanding, posting 57 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks and two interceptions and earned NJCAA All-American honors for his efforts and this season he's been just as good, posting 54 tackles, nine tackles-for-loss, one sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

While recruiting hasn't been stagnant, Simmons is holding just two offers -- from Southern Illinois and Houston -- but a few other schools have shown some interest.

"I'm hearing a lot from Western Kentucky, Texas Tech and Texas A&M too," Simmons said. "I've already visited Southern Illinois and I'm probably going to be setting up one with Houston here pretty soon.

"I've unofficially visited A&M and Tech and they are pretty interested."

Simmons said after Blinn's bowl game he plans to take at least one more visit and then wants to decide on the first day of the mid-year signing period (December 15th).

Wherever he ends up, Simmons will have three years to play two once he steps on campus.
