Grossmont's Kelly has solid 2010 season

One of the top tacklers in the California JUCO ranks this season was Grossmont LB Pat Kelly (6-2, 230). He put up big numbers for a team that went 6-5 this season and now he's waiting for at least one four-year program to give him a look...

Kelly was a standout as a prep at Christian (El Cajon, Ca.) High School but didn't get a lot of recruiting attention, so he decided to head to Grossmont to show what he was made of.

"They have a great program here and I liked the coaches a lot," Kelly told "I felt like I could show what I could do against top competition and I feel like I did that the past couple years."

As the leader of the Griffins' defense, Kelly showed his stuff by leading the team with 90 tackles and also posted four tackles-for-loss, 1.5 sacks and an interception.

"I attack the ball and the line of scrimmage, that's what I do best," Kelly noted. "I don't waste steps and that's what my coaches said they liked about me and why I've been successful.

"I also have good instincts and the quickness I need to get to the ball."

Recruiting hasn't really hit its stride yet, but a handful of schools have begun to show interest.

"Sacramento State, Missouri Southern and New Mexico State are the ones showing me the most interest right now," Kelly said. "A lot of schools have been through to see us this season, but I haven't talked to a lot of them so far, but hopefully they will in the future."

Kelly will finish up his AA this month and he will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
