Woods finds a home

One of the top JUCO signal-callers still looking for a home finally found one recently when Grossmont QB Ryan Woods (6-3, 205) committed to be an invited walk-on at San Jose State this fall...

"I took an official visit up there and decided to be an invited walk-on," Woods told JCFootball.com recently. "I talked to the coaches and they didn't have a scholarship available, but they wanted to bring in an older guy who they could have be in the system and possibly be ready to go since all but one of their quarterbacks are pretty young."

Woods said he has spoken to the coaches about a scholarship and they know where he stands.

"We talked about it and they know that if they want to keep me around I need to have a scholarship because it's expensive," Woods said. "They said I can come in and compete and that I have a great shot at earning one, so really, it's all on me now."

Wood prepped at Granite Bay (Ca.) High School and signed with Fresno State after he graduated in the spring of 2006.

"I greyshirted there and I thought I was all set, but then there was a coaching change, their offensive coordinator left, and when that happened I just felt like I needed to find a different school," Woods told JCFootball.com.

But all didn't go as planned.

He sat out the 2007 season because he was unable to find a school to hook on with and then contracted Mono which caused him to miss the 2008 season as well.

Then, fate took hold and he found the right opportunity at Grossmont.

"I got here in 2009 and I've been really happy with my decision to (go to Grossmont)," Woods noted.

The 2010 season saw Woods fill up the stat sheet while leading the Griffs to a 6-5 record by completing 56.9% of his passes for 3,112 yards, 29 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

"I can throw on the run really well and I can keep plays alive with my legs," Woods said. "I'm probably more of a pocket-passer, but I can run the spread well too and make plays from either system."

He will graduate next month (May) and will have two years to play two when he steps on campus in June.
