Things are heating up for Perkins

One of the top defensive backs still available is Highland CB Demarkus Perkins (6-2, 200) and he could be making a decision in the coming weeks after taking a couple of visits. spoke to the versatile athlete recently and he updated us on where things stand...

"Right now, things are getting a little crazy and hectic, but it's good," Perkins told recently. "I've been talking a lot with Florida International, Minnesota, Arizona State and Indiana.

"Miami also wants me to come out, but their academic counselors don't think I can finish up my degree in time, so they are sorta hold off right now."

Perkins plans to visit Arizona State this weekend and could be setting something up with Minnesota very soon as well.

"I'm going up to ASU on May 5th to check them out and I'll know a lot more about things after I talk to the coaches," Perkins noted. "Minnesota could be my visit next week, but I'm not sure. I still have to work out things with them and my classes."

As a freshman for the Scotties last fall, Perkins played both safety and corner, totaling 36 tackles, one interception and eight passes defensed.

"Depending on the team we played and the defense we called, that determined what I was going to play," Perkins noted. "I love playing corner, but I like safety too. It doesn't really matter to me where a school wants me. I'll play anywhere."

As a prep, Perkins was a standout at Southeast High School in Bradenton, Florida, but was young and, as he states it, not ready to play big-time college football.

"I was only 17 when I graduated and I wasn't ready to face that on a day-to-day basis," Perkins told "I had a couple of friends who had played JC football and they said that going to Highland was a great opportunity for me.

"I was like 'they only won two games' and they were like, 'it doesn't matter' because if you can play, you can play and it will all come out and scouts will see you if you are worthy of it."

Perkins will finish up his two-year degree this summer and will have four years to play three wherever he ends up.
