Hawkins holds the edge for NW Mississippi

Four-year schools are always looking for a player they can plug in at left tackle and forget about because he's able to handle his assignments without help from others. One such player that has FBS schools drooling is Northwest Mississippi OT Donald Hawkins (6-5, 320) and with four offers to his name, he's already showing he'll be one of the top JUCO tackles available after the season...

"Things have been going really well," Hawkins told JCFootball.com recently. "I have four offers -- from Kentucky, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and Oklahoma State -- and I have a bunch more schools that want to offer me, but they are waiting to see if I can finish up in December."

The two schools closest to offering are two more SEC programs and he said they should be able to see he is on pace following summer session.

"Auburn and Ole Miss want to see my transcripts to make sure and everything, but they said if I can get out in December, they were going to offer," Hawkins noted.

As a prep at Rosa Fort High School in Tunica, Ms., Hawkins drew a lot of attention from schools in the SEC, ACC and Big 12, however he was unable to qualify, so he decided to go the JC route.

"I knew I could play D-1 ball and I wanted to have a chance to do that so I figured Northwest was the right place for me to be," Hawkins said.

As a freshman, Hawkins held down the left side of the Rangers' offensive line and said he learned a lot in his first year of college football.

"I've always been a better pass-blocker, but I can run-block well too," Hawkins said. "I love going up against defensive ends one-on-one and just battling it out.

"I learned some different techniques and different things. The guys here are fast, so you have to be ready for that, but I think I handled it pretty well and I'm just focused on improving this summer in all aspects."

Hawkins maintains he is on pace to graduate in December and he will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
