Blinn DE prospect is one to watch this fall

Year in and year out, Blinn is loaded up front with outstanding talent along the defensive line. DE John Gandy (6-0, 245) is one of the more versatile players for the Buccaneers and he spoke with JCFootball.com recently about things and noted that he isn't a one-trick pony...

"I play the five-technique for us because we sorta play a hybrid 3-4 scheme where the linebackers rush the quarterback a lot, so I'm head-up on the tackle a lot instead of out wide," Gandy told JCFootball.com. "I can play anywhere though, weakside, strongside, inside at the three (technique), anywhere that I can help my team out."

As a redshirt freshman last fall, Gandy was outstanding in his role, finishing with 29 tackles and 4.5 sacks while starting seven games.

"We rotated starts, so I didn't start every game, but we rotated a lot so that wasn't that big of a deal," Gandy noted. "I just went out and did my job. I can play the run and pass equally well. I wouldn't say I can do one better than the other.

"This summer I'm working on my ball get-off and also on my hand placement and my strength."

While he's focused on building up his weight-room strength, his numbers aren't bad -- a 335 pound bench press and a 295 pound power-clean.

On the recruiting front, Gandy, who graduated from Cypress Ridge High School in Houston, has yet to see his first offer roll in, but that doesn't mean schools haven't showed him interest.

"No offers yet, but I have been in touch with Louisiana Tech, Memphis and Utah so far," Gandy noted. "I want to find the right place -- a place where I can fit in and I have a chance to play right away because I only have two years left after this season."

Gandy is on pace to graduate in December and he will have two years to play two wherever he ends up.
