Watkins is a tackling-machine

After putting up big numbers in 2010, NDSCS LB Johnny Watkins (6-0, 230) is ready for an even better 2011 season. JCFootball.com spoke with the tackling-machine recently and he updated us on things...

Watkins prepped at Washburn (Minneapolis, Mn.) High School and redshirted at Minnesota State - Mankato in 2009, but decided he wanted to give himself a chance at playing football for an FBS school and headed to North Dakota to play for the Wildcats.

Playing both inside and outside last fall, Watkins posted 88 tackles, six forced fumbles and one interception and said he's at his best inside stuffing the run.

"I'm at my best stopping the run, but I'm more of a player that flies around and makes plays," Watkins told JCFootball.com. "I'm really working hard on my speed and my explosion and I also watching a lot of film just so I can read plays that much better."

On the recruiting front, Watkins has yet to really see things pick up, but he has heard from two schools out west who have said they like what they've seen so far.

"This year I've heard from Utah and San Diego State," Watkins said. "They both told me they like me and want to see some more of me, but they like what I can do.

"We had a lot of schools come by in the spring and watch us and my coaches said they had a bunch of schools asking about me, but those are the only two I really spoke to."

Watkins is on pace to finish things up in December academically and he'll have two years to play two wherever he ends up.
