Iowa Western DE ready for big 2011 season

Iowa Western DE Ty Branz (6-2.5, 240) is hoping to follow up a solid freshman season with an even better sophomore campaign. JCFootball.com caught up with the talented defensive lineman has been hard at work this summer in order to put himself in the best position possible to earn a D-1 scholarship offer...

Branz prepped at York (NE) High School and was a full-qualifier, but because his team didn't have a lot of success he flew under the radar.

"Not a lot of schools came by to watch us," Branz admitted to JCFootball.com. "I didn't get much in the way of attention and when I was looking for a JC, I talked to my wrestling coach and he knew some of the coaches here so that is why I ended up here."

As a freshman last fall, Branz finished with 28 tackles and 3.5 sacks while starting every game at defensive end.

"I played mainly on the right side," Branz said. "We don't really play a weakside/strongside defensive end position.

"I'm probably a better pass-rusher, but I think I can play the run well too. I just want to be faster off the ball this season and get better in all phases of the game, but most of all I want to show teams I can play at the next level."

On the recruiting front, Branz has yet to see much in the way of attention from four-year schools, but he hopes that changes once the season gets underway.

"I've mainly heard from some D-2 schools and a couple 1AA programs," Branz said. "It really hasn't been much up to this point, but my coaches feel like if I have a good season and get off to a good start, that teams will take notice of me."

Branz is on pace to graduate in December and will have two years to play two wherever he ends up.
