2011 Team Preview: Alfred State

The Alfred State Pioneers posted a 4-6 record in 2010 and with the help of some talented players on both sides of the ball, they hope 2011 sees them return to the post season...

Unfortunately for head coach Mick Caba and his staff, they return only five starters - two on offense and three on defense -- but they have some talented incoming freshman as well as some top prospects to keep an eye on.

On offense, WR/TE Devin Simmons, who is a legitimate 6'5", 225 pounds is a threat in the deep middle with the speed (4.5) to really be a mismatch with linebackers and the size to cause problems for any defensive backs who try to cover him.

Simmons posted 18 receptions for 235 yards and one touchdown as a freshman last season and if the Pioneers can find a good signal-caller to get him the ball he should see his numbers double this year.

Along the offensive line, Glenn Garrett, a native of Holland, New York is an absolute beast and he's already garnering a lot of attention from four-year schools. At 6'4, 300 pounds and with light feet he could end up playing almost anywhere along the offensive line.

P Colter Johnson is an All-American candidate with his big leg. He posted a 39-yard net average last season as a freshman and had a long of 77 yards so he can really root it when he needs to.

Defensively, the Pioneers have a couple stalwarts in LB Rory Spain and CB Brett Harrington.

Spain is your prototypical middle linebacker with his 6'2", 240 pound frame and strong hands. As a freshman last fall, the talented prospect had solid numbers -- 52 tackles, 5 tackles-for-loss, 1 sack and 1 interception -- and he should be able to put up even better totals with a year of seasoning.

Harrington is physical for a corner and his size, 6'2", 195 pounds, means he can match-up against the big receivers that teams regularly throw out there.

He posted 40 tackles, 6 tackles-for-loss and three interceptions in 2010 and he's poised to be even better this fall.

The Pioneers take on Buffalo State JV to start their season on September 12th and then begin league play by hosting Erie on September 17th.
