2011 Team Preview: Independence

Independence made the playoffs in 2010, but coming off of a 4-6 record, second-year head coach Steve Carson and his staff know they have a lot of work ahead of them. This weekend. the Pirates take on Trinity Valley in the SWJCC – KJCCC Challenge and he has four interesting prospects to keep an eye on...

Offensively, the Pirates lost their best player when RB Stephen Houston signed with North Carolina after totaling nearly 1,100 yards and five touchdowns.

Doing his best to take Houston's place will be James Baker, a physical, big-back who rushed for nearly 600 yards and three scores as a freshman in 2010.

Up front, Byron Grant, a guard prospect, leads a young group of lineman who have a chance to be good if they develop sooner rather than later.

On defense, the Pirates are young up front, but they do return FS Selwyn Frazier, a 6'1", 200-pounder who totaled 68 tackles last season.

Along with Frazier, the other player to watch on defense this year is Segniald Chaney who could play all three linebacker position.

Carson and his staff return six starters - four on offense and two on defense - so they have a lot of work ahead of them.

They kickoff the season this weekend (Saturday, August 27th) against Trinity Valley and then begin conference play on September 3rd with a road game against Hutchinson.
