2011 Team Preview: Trinity Valley

Trinity Valley head coach Brad Smiley and his staff have 17 starters returning - 8 on offense and 9 on defense - from last year's squad that went 6-5. This year, the Cardinals are poised to challenge for a SWJCC title and here is a look at some of their top prospects to keep an eye on...

Leading the TVC offensive attack is QB Tucker Carter, a 6'2", 215-pound signal-caller who played a backup role as a freshman in 2010.

Behind Carter in the backfield will be two freshman running backs, Jermicheal Selders and Rufus Mason, who the coaches are excited about.

When Carter drops back to pass, he will have several weapons to look for including Derel Walker who hauled in 11 receptions for 198 yards and two scores as a freshman in 2010.

Buddy Nunn, a Colorado State signee, enrolled at TVC this summer and has impressed while Jack Brown is a threat as a runner or receiver and could play multiple roles this fall.

Up front, the Cardinals boast several talented prospects including Oklahoma State bounceback Javius Townsend and Jeremy Raine, who started five games in 2010.

Defensively, Trinity Valley is loaded up front with the likes of Kennedy Jones and Parker Holloway at the defensive end spots and Wesley Hollingshed and Quincy Russell inside.

Hollingshed, a Nevada signee, posted 20 tackles and two sacks in 2010 and Russell signed with Texas this year, but was unable to qualify.

The linebackers and quick and athletic and are led by Jermaine Longino (47 tackles) and Anthony Garner (12 tackles).

North Carolina State bounceback Keivon Gamble returns at one of the corner spots after an outstanding freshman season that saw him post 36 tackles, 4 interceptions and an amazing 20 passes defensed in 2010.

The other cornerback will be Clifford Stokes who played a backup role last season and Martez Shabazz is set to play in nickel packages this fall.

FS Dele Junaid, an Ole Miss bounceback, is also a prospect to watch.

On special teams, TVC is blessed with two players that have D-1 potential in P Brad Dunavant and LS Kevin Garza.

Both were named to the All-Conference teams this past season and should garner some looks from schools as the season moves along.

Trinity Valley begins their season this weekend (Saturday, August 27th) against Independence in the SWJCC – KJCCC Challenge and then play host to Kilgore on September 10th to begin conference play.
