2011 Team Preview: Pima

Playing in the Western States Football Conference, Pima faces some tough competition week in and week out, however, after a 3-8 season, head coach Pat Nugent and his staff feel like they have acquired enough talent to make some noise. Here is a look at some of the top prospects on the Aztecs' roster and who could have a breakout season this fall...

Nugent and his staff return three starters on offense including QB Zander McKean who completed over 51% of his passes for nearly 1,214 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

While he isn't considered a dual-threat quarterback, he did manage to rush for 83 yards and another score and he's shown good mobility and a feel for when to tuck the ball and when to keep the play alive.

When he hands the ball off, A.J. Willis will be the starting running back, but he will also likely split some carries with DeAnthony Easley, a talented freshman who has looked outstanding since arriving this summer.

Pima lost most of their top wideouts, but Joe Kupsizewski and Cameron Gaddis are adequate replacements although they have only four combined receptions between the two of them.

Up front, the Aztecs have started to load up on talent and leading the way is North Carolina State bounceback Sam Jones at one of the tackle spots along with Daniel Simmons and Stuart Tawney.

Defensively, the Aztecs are young up front, but they have some quality in the back seven including LB Andrew Cesarini who saw limited reps last fall, but has really come on since spring ball completed back in May.

Ronnie Burton returns at one of the corner spots after posting 21 tackles and one interception in 2010.

Adrian Brahler returns at one safety spot and newcomer Danell Miles, a freshman qualifier, will man the other spot.

Also keep an eye on freshmen like TE Cory Myers and DB Josh Kimbell.

K/P Jon Mora signed with Arizona out of high school, but he enrolled at Pima and should have a big season for the Aztecs this fall.

Pima routed the Sonora Institute of Technology 59-0 over the weekend to get off to a 1-0 start and face Glendale this coming weekend.
