JCJC returns an experienced punter, deep snapper and return specialists, but will have a new placekicker.
"We are pleased with the way they have done in preseason," said JCJC head coach Eddie Pierce. "We have a lot of confidence in them. Most of our special teams players are veterans and we expect them to do well."
Returning at punter is Quitman sophomore Slater Smith (6-4, 225). Smith averaged 37.1 yards per punt last year. Greene County freshman Logan Brewer (5-11, 210) will be the placekicker, while South Jones sophomore Robert Hanna (5-11, 230) returns as the deep snapper.
"Slater punted every ball we punted last year and at one point, had one of the top averages in the nation," said Pierce. "Logan has a good, strong leg and is kicking the ball well for us. Robert snapped every deep ball for us and we are really counting on those guys this year."
The Bobcat kickers are coached by Lacon Sheppard.
As far as return specialists are concerned, Wayne County sophomore Malik Lofton (6-0, 195) and Baton Rouge, La., sophomore Deuce Coon (5-11, 200) returned kicks last year. Coon returned 21 punts/kicks last year, while Lofton had 12 returns, including a 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the game vs. East Central.
A newcomer this year to the return game will be Quitman freshman Quartez Cooks (6-1, 180).
"Malik and Deuce both did a good job for us year and we are counting on them again," said Pierce. "Quartez may be the fastest player on the team."
The Bobcats open the season at home at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1 in Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field against Mississippi Delta Community College. The game will be televised on www.jcjc.tv and can be heard on WGDQ-FM, 93.1. Lance Pittman will call the play-by-play and Mark Easley provides commentary.
