Lavoris "Tiger" Powell (6-1, 205) returns for his sophomore season and is the only running back with experience on the Bobcat roster.
"Tiger is a big running back," said JCJC head coach and running backs' coach Eddie Pierce. "He weighs over 200 pounds and for a big back, he has great hands coming out of the backfield. He is a veteran who played last year, so he has experience.
"He is a good, all-around running back. He is a good blocker and runs the ball hard."
Powell is from Columbia High School in Lake City, Fla. He signed with the University of South Florida out of high school.
Last season as a freshman with the Bobcats, Powell rushed 51 times for 197 yards and caught nine passes for 44 yards.
Behind Powell is a true freshman, Jovontae Thurman (5-8, 180) of Florence.
"Jovontae is a small back with great speed," Pierce said. "He has good vision and runs the ball hard for his size."
Another player who could provide depth in the backfield is Devontay Barnett (6-1, 190) of West Jones.
"Devontay will play strong safety and could help us at running back," Pierce said. "They are all good athletes and good backs and we are looking forward to watching them play."
Another player who will see action in the backfield is Thomas Williams (6-0 250), a freshman fullback from Quitman.
Overall, Pierce is pleased with the Bobcat running backs.
"They have worked hard so far and I'm proud of them," he said. "I can't ask for a better group to work with right now. Of course, Tiger is the leader of the group because of his experience."
The Bobcats open the season at home at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1 in Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field against Mississippi Delta Community College. The game will be televised on www.jcjc.tv and can be heard on WGDQ-FM, 93.1. Lance Pittman will call the play-by-play and Mark Easley provides commentary
