Mississippi JC Football Recap 9/19/11

#8 East MS 45 #4 Northwest 42

In the marquee match up of the night in the MACJC it was visiting eight ranked East MS beating fourth ranked Northwest 45-42 to improve to 3-0 and 1-0 in the north division and picking up its second win against a ranked opponent.

Northwest out gained EMCC 545-386 and won the time of possession battle by a margin of 36:55 to 23:05 but the difference was a 100-yard missed field goal return from WR Rodney Davis. Davis fielded a Chase Carpenter 50 yard field goal attempt six yards deep in the end zone and returned it for the touchdown.

The Rangers drop to 2-1 and 0-1 in the north division.

Northeast 16 MS Delta 3

Northeast Mississippi Community College won 16-3 over north division foe Mississippi Delta in Moorhead. Northeast (3-0, 1-0 in North Division) used 13-second half points to leap into victory lane.

The Tigers put the game away when Michael Poole found the end zone from three yards out with 6:16 left capping a nine-play, 45-yard drive that ate up over five minutes of the 4th quarter clock. The Tigers take on Holmes Community College on Thursday in Booneville.


The 13th ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Community Bulldogs got past Jones County Jr College 17-10 in the MACJC South Division opener for both teams. MGCCC lost star running back James Gillum to an ankle injury on the game's first series but got gritty running back support from reserve backs Kadero Edley, Anton Thornton, and Reginald Matthews.

The win propels the Bulldogs to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the South Division. JCJC falls to 2-1 and 0-1.

East Central Comes From Behind To Beat Itawamba 24-17

Darius Wren's 78-yard interception return with less than two minutes remaining set up East Central Community College's game-winning touchdown and capped a rally for the Warriors that led them into the win column for the first time this season.

#14 Pearl River holds back Southwest 27-20

Ft. Myers Fla. All-American quarterback Melvin German of Pearl River connected with Seth Roberts for a 21-yard touchdown pass with 1:41 left and the Wildcats get past a stubborn Southwest Bears team in the south division opener for both schools.

PRCC improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in division play, while SMCC dropped to 1-2 and 0-1.

Unranked Hinds Blanks #20 Co-lin On The Road 36-0

Sophomore defensive back Adonis Armstrong of Clinton, MS had his second multi-pick game of the season, collecting two interceptions for 112 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown return with 13:21 left in the fourth quarter. Armstrong also recovered a fumble to add to his impressive outing.

Hinds is now 2-1 1-0 in the south while the #20 Wolves fall to 2-1 and 0-1 in divisional play

Holmes over Coahoma 15-14

Holmes Head Coach Jeff Koonz earns his first victory as the Bulldogs head coach. It was the first win for Holmes CC since a victory over Southwest CC back in 2009.
