Loncar To The Rescue For Citrus

After getting knocked around a bit last week against #5 Riverside, Blake Loncar (photo) didn't start Saturday afternoon for Citrus against Chaffey. But he came along in time to lift the Owls to the 30-23 win, entering just before halftime and throwing 3 touchdown passes, including the game-winner to Kelvin Chatham with 1:45 left.

Loncar entered the game for the final series of the first half with Citrus (3-3, 1-0) trailing, 10-0. He completed his first pass attempt in that series and his first six of the second half for a string of seven straight that included touchdown passes to B.J. Oyefeso and Chatham to give Citrus a 13-10 lead. Chaffey (3-3, 0-1) briefly went back in front, and the score was even until Loncar's third and final touchdown pass that broke a 23-all tie and lifted the Owls to the win.

All of that followed an ugly first half and a particularly gruesome first quarter. The first quarter featured a combined total 8 penalties, 3 turnovers, 3 punts, no points and 4 dead flies as head basketball coach Jeff Klein performed insect patrol in the press box. And most of the second quarter featured more of the same with another interception, a missed field goal and more dead flies.

Finally, Chaffey got on the board after Anderson Otaufi's second interception, putting together an 80-yard drive and setting up a 27-yard field goal by Joey Cejudo with 3:38 left in the half. Then Chaffey's Vincent Minor grabbed the Panthers' third interception off Citrus starter Rocky Moore with 3:06 left. Two plays later. Charles King threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Ivan Lilly to make it 10-0 with 2:16 left in the half.

At that point, Loncar entered the game for Citrus. He completed his first pass of the game, a 5-yard toss to Oyefeso, but the Owls still ended up punting the ball away without gaining a first down and went into intermission trailing by ten points.

Once the second half started, however, things changed quickly for Citrus, which took the kickoff and drove down the field in less than two minutes. A 48-yard run by Demetrius Counts got the Owls close, and a 10-yard pass from Loncar to Oyefeso finished the drive and made it 10-6 (the extra point was blocked). The Owls then forced a Chaffey punt, and Eric Glaster broke through and blocked the kick, giving Citrus the ball at the Panther 34. Six plays later, Loncar threw an 18-yard touchdown pass, his fifth straight completion to start his day, to Chatham that gave Citrus its first lead of the day at 13-10 just 6:15 into the second half.

Then the game settled down, with both teams playing well, in sharp contrast to the mistake-filled first half. Chaffey went back in front when King scored on a 2-yard run late in the third quarter. Citrus answered with a 31-yard field goal by Andres Magallon in the first minute of the third quarter to tie the game at 16.

Citrus got another break when Chaffey's David Davila punted with 13:16 left in the game; the kick went off the side of his foot for a 17-yard punt, giving the Owls the ball at the 50. Six plays later, fullback Jesus Vargas plowed through the line for a 1-yard scoring run to give Citrus a 23-16 lead.

And after another (longer - 36 yards) Chaffey punt, Citrus threatened to put the game away, driving to the Panther 29. But on 4th down, Loncar was stopped for a 2-yard loss on a keeper, giving Chaffey the ball back with 7:29 left. Chaffey answered with a 7-play, 69-yard drive to even the score with 3:59 remaining, tying the score when Richie Lopez scored on a 13-yard run.

Then came the winning drive which started at the Owl 30 but moved well into Chaffey territory on the first play when Loncar teamed with Oyefeso for a 49-yard pass play to the Panther 21 before Minor made the saving tackle for Chaffey. Then Ricky Johnson ran for 8 yards to the 13 and, on the next play, for 11 more to the 2 and, on the play after that for another yard to the 1. A personal foul penalty on Citrus moved the ball back to the 16, but on the next play Loncar threw the 16-yard game-winning touchdown strike to Chatham.

Chaffey got the ball back twice more deep in its own territory but failed to gain a yard either time, and Citrus had the win in the battle between schools separated by only about 20 miles of the 210 freeway.

Loncar finished 16 for 23 passing for 230 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions, seeming none the worse for wear after sitting out most of the first half. Johnson led Owl rushers with 79 yards on 21 carries. Oyefeso had 6 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown, and Chatham had 4 catches for 64 yards and two touchdowns.

For Chaffey, King was 18 for 37 passing for 225 yards and a touchdown, and he also rushed for 33 yards on 13 carries (that would be 10 carries for 48 yards if sacks are subtracted out) and a touchdown. Joey Legere led all rushers with 87 yards on 15 carries. Lilly had 6 catches for 65 yards and Markeis Levette had 4 catches for 91 yards.
