Big 12 offer 'opens things up' for Johnson

L.A. Pierce DB Oliver Johnson (6-1, 185) committed to Arizona State over the summer and remains happy with his decision, however, an offer from a Big 12 school has opened his eyes a bit and he said he's planning to take at least a few visits before he signs his letter-of-intent...

"I got offered by Texas Tech (Saturday) and that really opened my eyes a lot," Johnson told "They have been recruiting me a little and then I get the offer from them, so I'm thinking about visiting them and a few other schools, but I'm committed to Arizona State."

While Johnson has just three offers to his name -- Texas Tech, Arizona State and New Mexico State-- he said schools like Ole Miss and Miami, along with a few others are turning up the heat a little bit as well.

"I've had a lot of schools showing interest in me, so it's something I have to consider," Johnson said. "I like my situation at Arizona State and I'm still committed to them, but I have to be sure about things before I sign with them."

Johnson missed the first few games of the season with a high ankle sprain, but has returned the the Brahmas lineup and has posted seven tackles and four passes defensed.

"It's not going to fully heal until I'm able to rest it, but I wanted to get out and help my team any way that I can," Johnson said. "I'll play, then it will swell up and I have to treat it during the week and then I play on Saturday and it swells up again.

"I'm used to it now, so I'm just going forward and then in the offseason I can rest it and it will be ready to go for spring ball wherever I end up."

Johnson is on pace to sign with a school in December and he will have three years to play two following the 2011 football season.
