WAC school making a run at Santa Monica CB

One of the top JUCO DBs in the state of California this season was Santa Monica CB Brian Hawthorne (5-11, 180) and after a solid sophomore year, the talented cover-corner has an offer and a visit set up and he could be making a decision very soon after returning home...

Hawthorne prepped at Narbonne High School in nearby Harbor City, Ca. and was unable to qualify, so he headed to Santa Monica where he switched from offense to defense.

"I played wide receiver all through high school, for the most part, but when I got here I moved over the DB pretty quickly," Hawthorne told JCFootball.com. "I like contact and I feel like I'm a smart player, so I can recognize things pretty well.

"When I get my hands on the ball, I'm real elusive."

This season, Hawthorne had his hands on plenty of passes, reeling in six interceptions while also knocking down nine passes and posted 42 tackles as well.

That productivity to go along with his 4.4 speed has gotten the attention of a few schools with one WAC program becoming the first to send an offer his way.

"Hawaii has offered and I'm visiting them on January 20th," Hawthorne said. "South Florida likes me and I've been talking a lot with New Mexico State, so that's sorta where things stand right now.

"After I get back from my visit to Hawaii, I will see where things are and make my decision."

Hawthorne is on pace to graduate in May and will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
