Mafi getting close to a decision

Laney LB Dyllon Mafi (6-3, 215) had a big season in 2011 and has parlayed that productivity into at least one offer and one more could be on the way. JCFootball.com caught up the talented prospect recently and he filled us in on where things stand...

"I got offered by Oregon State and took a trip there last weekend," Mafi told JCFootball.com. "It was a real good visit. They showed me around and told me they thought I would really like it there, but they didn't push me to commit or anything like that."

In addition to his offer from the Beavers, Mafi is getting heavy interest from San Diego State and he may be visiting there this weekend.

"I'm just waiting for them to call me back," Mafi said. "I only have the Oregon State offer right now, but the San Diego State coaches said they won't bring you out on a trip unless they offer you, so I guess if I end up tripping down there, that's another offer for me too.

"New Mexico called me today actually and they were talking about me visiting too, but it's sorta just starting with them, so at this point I'm not really sure what will happen with them."

Mafi prepped at Oakland (Ca.) High School and was a late-qualifier and found the Laney football program shortly after graduating.

"This place was a great find for me," Mafi noted. "I loved the staff and the area. It was the right place for me."

Playing pretty much every linebacker spot this season, Mafi totaled 55 tackles, 12 tackles-for-loss and two sacks and said that he feels most schools are looking at him as an outside linebacker.

"I think I'm probably a better fit at the SAM (strongside) spot," Mafi admitted. "I'm better in coverage, but I can play the run well too."

Mafi will graduate in May and will have three years to play two wherever he ends up.
